What do the rubies do?

The red orbs power up your weapon, up to 3 times. And there's no plot. You're in some sort of hell. Survive as long as you can. Over and over. That's all.

Devil Daggers is a very barebones, what you see is what you get game. The red gems are your powerups, collect ten of them and your become more powerful, shooting more daggers. Collect 70 of them and you become even more powerful. Keep in mind thought that while you are shooting you cannot collect gems, and they no longer move towards you and that when you fire your shotgun, the gems get pushed away.

Plot: You are in hell and you have a magical hand that can shoot daggers. Skulls try to kill you. You try to not get killed. The end.

According to the steam store frontpage, the place is an abyssal arena, the enemies are demons, the gems are demonic crystals.
So, this is Abyss. Wether the abyss is located in hell, is a kind of hell, or is a completly different place I have no idea. For all I know the player is invading a demon resort, or stole the dagger which was a relic revered by the locals and they are all trying to get it back.

This game is essentially just a challenge to get the 500 second achievement, and its just cool
