3D Particulate would be as awesome as 3D Creeper, I agree. I've never been mored hyped for a game pre-release than Creeper World 4 (I'm pretty much immune to hype). However, as older games have shown, movement in 3D space is tricky, and often frustrating, requiring massive amounts of hidden assists to make it anything approaching intuitive.
As to your idea of modifying ships, early builds of the game do show that this was an intended feature that eventually got scrapped to simplify the process, so it is entirely possibly that a sequel would include this.
As much as I'd like to see Creeper World 4 (and Particle Fleet 2, should it ever become a thing), I'm happy to wait. Virgil is one of an exceedingly short list of developers (can be counted on one hand, ignoring thumbs, even if you have an accident with a lawn mower) that I have absolute faith in, and I'm perfectly content waiting, because I know the end product will be all the better because of it.
Unfortunately both games are just too easy if you download maps from the community.
