Anyway, if you haven't found this already, then here is a link to the 'old' steam forum for Krater where there is a post about the things you can tweak in the settings file, mind you, you have to do this manually via notepad or notepad++(or similar).

On the issue with being unplayable and laggy, in general with Krater, if your desktop or laptop is right at the minimum requirement, it will not run that well...in general minimum means, it will run, but not necessarily run well.
Anyway, do take a look at the link I posted, you should be able to tweak things to what might be a playable state.
If you have any problems doing it or need help with it, just ask here and I will see what I can do
If you don't like editing the settings file, just post the resolution you play the game in, your graphic card/cpu and how much ram you have(and if it is desktop or laptop) and I will see if I can make a settings file with settings that may run the game a bit better for you.
