A clean stage, is a stage without damaging the car's cosmetics. You can leave the road and even hit some roadside objects and still get a clean stage.
I kept losing that bonus all the time, until I realized I had to stop the car completely before the marshal.
Lol, I´ve just realized that. I had the challenge "End event with not more than 5 recoveries" And in the end it showed that I had 3 while I was sure I had 0. But I have passed the marshal a few times.
More specifically....cause no further damage to your car than was done to it before the start, in any way. You can stay on the road all you like, but bounce off a snow bank too hard, or even grazing your undercarriage can cause it to fail.
On the other hand, I've grazed signposts and broken the tape and a couple of poles on cordons and still got the clean stage. As it caused no damage to my car.
And put your end of stage braking onto 3 or 4 if you keep hitting the Marshall. ;)
Hope that helps.
