It's too much!
The game is fine, but after a few shells , i am asking myself, what's the point ?
If every items can be lost in 3 sec because (so many reason) ... it's not friendly at all.

And doing the same thing again and again is not fun, either it s too easy, or too hard, but not really challenging . ( i experienced only the 3-4 first level)

Idk, it s like playing a game without save ... so upgrade + no save don't really go well together.
Could be better if items had durability, need repair (at very high cost), or randomly drop on death .
At least money could be used for something.

Same goes for UC, (for repairing rare stuff, or revive shell) because buying storage hmmm.

The game is ok, but player are pushed to be super cautious, leech, etc, or play on map with little risk (and then noobs are struggling to keep the pace, not killing anything, because 1 or 2 players are cleaning the map)

Keep playing for a higher score lol. Its a perma death game, if you dont like it play a different game, its that simple. Its like asking why you have to shoot people in Call of Duty, lets just call it Call of Friendship were they all have tea parties instead. Instead of trying to change the game just go look for a game that fits your needs and stop trying to ruin it for the people that do enjoy it.

Agree with op

I just leech off top geared players when they do 100 elite map runs.

Then die to some bs in normal map

It was fun for awhile, guess game doesn't want money.

It's 1980's oldschool hardcore. You won't understand if you didn't grow up in that era. Finish an arcade game on 1 quarter, without dying once. That was the challenge.

There's way too much hand-holding in modern gaming. I played games a kid that would make kids these days brains melt.

People don't understand that the obvjective of the game isn't to have maxed out stats and awesome gear. It's solely on getting better, and having fun doing so

yeah and as op says "whats the point"... well at least this game have a point not like most games where you die... and? you lose money that you can easily get back or nothing in most cases. At least here you realize what death really is and I think its better this way. Like realm of the mad god.

When you die, you lose all of your powerups and have to fight naked, against overwhelming forces.

Download MAME ( multi arcade emulator ) and play it for free.

I'm fine with losing my items, but having to constantly regrind the tier is getting annoying. It would be a lot more enjoyable if I didnt have to redo fire forest every time I die. Perhaps locking in just Mk1 after accomplishing some difficult task would help. Perhaps taking out some difficult boss, finishing enough zones, or reaching Mk3 or 4 enough times.

You don't have to do fire forest every time. If you saved some decent items and/or feel up to the challenge, you can easily skip ahead to harder stages to get your Mk1. I tend to just run Vanquished a few times for equips then move on to Strands, Underground Base, and Graveyard. Before I know it, I'm Mk3.

Sure you dont have to, but its the safest way to get mk1 out of the way. Vanquished is easy enough, but after you do it 50 times it also gets boring.

I suppose the most important issue of continuing to play is "Whats the Point?"
I understand the allure of beating all 16 levels of the game in one life for old school gamers yet for people such as me who aren't used to such challenges, The concept is intimidating to me.

This is actually my first game in which Permadeath was a thing, but I got used to it and im having a blast.

But, there is that underlying feeling in me in which I feel like im not doing anything worthwhile. Sure my reflexes and motor skills are improving and im getting further and Further in portals, But I have Nothing to show for it.

All in all, I think its coming down to a lack of content at this moment.
There's no Customization to work for, No social functions outside of a basic chat to play with friends, and I lack more shells to play with.
In all honesty, Working for the Ironclad and Fabricator has been the main reason for me staying.

Oh. And Story.
THAT would be something to keep playing for.
Break out the Story, give us Objectives, make us feel like we are constantly fighting an Ancient enemy that destroyed our home with Overwhelming ferocity.
Make us feel like we are a part of a Resistance against an evil foe, and I bet, alot of us would stick around.

Considering the last part, well there is one, it's the star cathedral boss, that's the objective of the game, and trust me it ain't an easy one... He's the one which caused the 'starbreak' by the way

... No.
"caused starbreak"?
Nope.
This is just a powerful enemy that wants to harvest the star's power. You're there to destroy the generators.

Nah...the most story we ever get is A video on Steam, which SHOULD be in the Game by the way, the descriptions to maps....
and...thats about it.

I don't understand what happened in the events after the Starbreak, Why we are going to these RANDOM locations, What happened to that Ancient enemy years ago.
I don't feel welcome or eased into the setting, I feel like I got dropped into someone's story written on a fancy napkin.
Start up game. IMMEDIATE tutorial as an Ancient soldier while everything is exploding. No back story, no dialogue. just a Sign telling me how to move forward.
Its confusing and half assed in executions at this moment which im VERY interested to see what Crunchy will dish out to add story to the game, Hell, what Crunchy will ADD to the game.
The Mechanics and Music are Solid, I haven't found any bugs or anything game breaking when it started. Just It lacks any "Heart" behind it's Action.

It sounds mean, I know, but its Honest criticism that get Game developers off of their ass and make beautiful works of art.

(rest of post omitted for brevity)

I do not disagree with your assertion that StarBreak may be lacking in in-universe motivation for your actions when you first jump into the game.

However, there are visual cues scattered throughout most of the missions which you may not have seen and which go a long way toward explaining why you are visiting them.

  • The secret in Underground Base implies that the Harvesters answer to the Watcher. Since Underground Base is the third of three missions dealing with Harvester worlds (Fire Forest being the first and Fungus Cave being the second), this connection motivates the exploration of all three places.
  • One of the possible rooms in the Vanquished has a hovering statue of the Watcher, explaining why the shells are trying to stop the alien invasion by showing who is behind it.
  • Strands, as the mission description states, is an inverted world. Whole worlds do not invert themselves spontaneously, so it is only natural to go there to search for evidence of Watcher activity.
  • The ships serving as the setting for the Graveyard mission may remind some of the ships shown in the tutorial. The Graveyard secret lends credence to the theory that these are the remains of humanity's spaceship fleet which was destroyed by the Star-Break caused by the Watcher. As evidenced by the weapons you use in the tutorial, ancient human technology was very advanced, and if these are in fact derelicts of ancient human spaceships, then there could still be some powerful weapons onboard for the shells to use against the Watcher's forces.
  • The secret in Temple of the Lost shows that the Watcher, by way of its gift to the civilization that built the Temple, directly caused that civilization's downfall; therefore, it is not too unreasonable to conclude that the shells visit the Temple in order to undo the damage done by the Watcher.

I have not listed the visual cues found in Star Cathedral, as the mission description already states that the shells are going there to stop its activation, and these cues only reinforce that purpose.

In short, the justifications for all the missions are mostly hidden within the missions themselves. Of course, until you find all of these secrets and make these connections, you will not understand why you are going to these places, so it is understandable for one to feel like they have no in-universe justifications for visiting these zones.

Maybe Crunchy Games could alleviate this confusion by padding the tutorial on both sides with additional exposition.

I take back what I said before. Its really not so bad and there really is no reason to do ff at mk0. Now I just go to tl and work on not getting hit while trying my best to stay in the fight and not leach. If you can manage to save up a +1 blast and empyreals you are good to do the tl boss at mk0 too.
