how does one get more renown?

been a while restarted the campaign, bought a 21,000 boat, got sunk by a single torp?!?!?!. went back to sink the merchant ships again but you only get rewards for the 1st run?...

been a while since i played but I remember having a vast fleet of ships.... i thought i remember farming the lower levels

No don't grind early levels it won't give more renown.

In the level-style campaign, you receive renown from each level, but not each time you beat a level. You can only get more renown for a level if you failed to sink all its ships last time (usually only submarines running away).
this means that the campaign is actually 10% ship battling, and 90% budgeting your renown to buy things at certain points. If you have beaten everything you can without that light cruiser, and don't have the renown to proceed, you might need to restart. Loosing your first light cruiser without the renown for another might be an insurmountable obstacle without great luck (ie battle resets) and good play.

If you want to win the campaign with less frustration, you will probably need to close the game mid-battle if something like this happens to you. On PC closing before a battle finishes will have it load up at its last save (which doesn't happen mid-battle).

go for a the best DD you can at the start, then its surprising how far you can get with a DD and a CL
I try and get to a good BB as my next ship after those or a CV if I'm in the mood
With a DD to smoke for the CV and a BB and CL as needed you can can them amass as much renown as you want for later missions in the campaign

In the battle of the atlantic just remember the force that's attacked doesn't need to be the force you defend with
I have 2 DD's in a safe place to use for sub attacks just click those when needed and you'll defend with those instead of the force that's attacked
or if you don't want to fight the battle, have a lone sub you can click so it can instantly disengage to end the battle

And before the boomer brigade call cheat, it's a single player game and I'll do what I want in it :)
