!!! Those of you unable to join a crew
The only known workaround right now is to join servers < 30-40 in population

A Unity network tech told us these reports mirror issues they fixed in newer versions, but moving an entire game to a new version of the engine is not advised. They attempted to backport the network & fixes to a new custom engine version specifically for us and it caused even more issues.

It was just a matter of unfortunate timing. The bug is so rare that during a year of closed Kickstarter testing we only had a single instance of it reported, so we assumed it was an external issue. Lo and behold when release comes your sample size increases drastically and less than 1% becomes a few hundred or possibly thousand people.

I just got off a Skype call with Unity's networking developer lead. This does not appear to be an issue with Blackwake specifically.

He said after our version (5.4.4) he continued to improve the networking and did find bugs similar to this, where if the server was under load some clients could not connect. The problem is upgrading Unity versions after a product is released is very risky and they advise not to do this.

He has told me what information I need to set up in a diagnostic for him to (hopefully) observe the bug happening. If we manage to find it he will attempt to back-port a patch for the issue to our current Unity version to hopefully address it.

I'll update this post when I have a beta branch client ready for you guys to connect with that contains the debugger.

Update:

While gathering logs for this the player used to test was having the same issue (could join teams on lower pop servers, but anything over 30-40 players they could not) and during the time of testing I stepped away. The server owner we were working with and another Discord member started asking the player questions and eventually narrowed it down to their anti virus. Disabling it all together did not fix the issue, but disabling a specific setting that filtered network traffic resolved the issue and they can now join any server, even 53/54.


Do any of you have an antivirus running? The antivirus used in this situation was Kaspersky.

Ok a Short fix for the connection problem to servers 35+ when KASPERSKY TOTAL SECURITY is running ( I can't really tell if it works for other Kaspersky versions or even different Internet Security apps as well, you might want to try, though):

Right-Click your Kaspersky Icon in the Task-Bar and go to:
- Settings

Go to
- Manage Programs (or something similar, I am translating from the german version)

Find "blackwake.exe" and right klick it and go to
- Details and rules

go to the column "exclusions"
and check the boxes:
- dont control program activity
- dont apply restrictions of superior Process(progam)
- dont control subordinate programs

hit SAVE afterwards

just to be sure, when right klicking blackwake exe in KASPERSKY hit
- restrictions

and choose "trusted"

For me this fix worked out.

i have that problem too, cannot join squads (no menu appear), also when manage to get into server i get: 1. the desyc or disconnection (keep playing but everything else on the server is frozen) or 2. crash to desktop, and playing with only 2 people on the server its not fun, so i asked for refund,i hope they accept it because i only managed to play 30 minutes without errors of all my 4 hours of use (trying and trying all the "fixes" provided without working). very dissapointed.

Can't join the crew even on low populated servers... still no response when pressing join the crew. + very often can't join the server at all, infinite loading. Really disappointed, can't even say how much. Few days ago I mentioned the game to friends and that it is on sale and like 6 of them bought it, but nope my game doesn't work for some reason. Used to be with no problems.... Disappointed.....

or getting stuck at the loading screen, or not being able to join a crew ( even on less than 30 people now).

And what happens when it does not work ? I get back on the menu...and then "THE F*****G GAME HAS CRASHED"

But i'm so stubborn, that i restart the game, and then i spent 30 minutes at trying to join a server again.

And when, by i don't know what kind of magic or sorcery/miracle whatever the f***k it is, i'm finally playing, i'm being disconnected/desynchronized, and then forced to get back on the menu (Only if my game does not crash).

I'm a bit annoyed.

And i wonder if there is not (just maybe) something slightly more important now to work on, instead of balancing grape shots damages.

I'm a bit irritated.

Thanks for that, it describes my problem for 100%. I am using Avast! as Antivirus.

Any solutions here so far?

We have just released a patch that will be followed by 2 more patches to alleviate the issue since we now suspect with good confidence what is actually happening. I've already started hearing back that it is working or happening at a much lower frequency now.

hey there seems to be a new issue. During the captain voting stage, the game freezes and disconnects. This seems consistent across servers.

Hello, thanks again for your work concerning that issue. Sadly, for me, it still doesn't work for 30+ people. I'll keep you aware for the next hotfixes.

(Btw i could at least visit the 3 new ships, that's an amazing job and i'm already in love with the carrack).

It looks like it has fixed the issue for some and not others, there are likely multiple causes. I have a few other ideas I'll be attempting in the next coming days

This issue just cropped up for me last week after changing ISP's. Where as before I had no problems playing. Nothing else (hardware wise) has changed.
Symptoms are exactly as described above.
Faction menu is unresponsive if 30 or more players are on.
Half the time, the join menu doesn't apear at all.
If I'm in a low populated server and it fills up past 30 players, the game stalls randomly after a few minutes.

Haven't had a chance to try 3.45 enough yet but in 3.4 would join and see team select, but would take sometimes a minute or so to actually join a team. Then again another minute or so for 'spawn' to work, then frequent lags and deaths into water off the ship while trying to choose loadout. Seems to be when trying to join a higher ping server for me.. which means anything other than Australia or North America (Europe servers) but it can happen on the North American servers too, if really full I think (50 ish).
