Flavor of the week type of game. People see streamers and youtubers play it or buy it on 90% sale, then have fun for a week or month before getting tired. Pumping water and reloading cannons is not for everyone, and it really requires a team spirit/mentality for it to be fun in the long run. Game is also finished and no more updates from the developer.

Unfortunate, but you will still be able to join a sever and play occasionally. There will probably be more sales which will periodically bring some people in.

Really a fan game, it's a pity the developers scored on it

I played both when it had constant servers filled with people in the middle of the night, up till it was almost dead.

Basically it was like this:
Trolls left as the game got patched, people left because of trolls. Like 10 to 15 percent of the community would be my guess. Most of what was left was guys who would just hop on every now and then to play (guys like you).
Well... over time new games came out, guys left for a while to play new games, and as guys came back theyd see that there were fewer and fewer people playing, so they wouldnt play it as much.

Long story short... the more people left the game, the more people would leave the game.

The big thing that this game needed to keep it alive was a SOLID player base. people who play regularly at X time. Think War of Rights. That game slowly got less and less players, but it still had tons of regiments, diehard fans (like me) and people who would get on during peak so servers would still be maxed out. And since there were still people playing, people would come back to play.

This game doesnt have that. There's no group or clan to KEEP the game alive. It's not even really like Iron Harvest where if you look you can find a small community who you just go "yo wanna play" and then yall hop in. There's no perma-community. And because of that, its dead, even on its launch day.

it did have die hards, just not enough, 50-100 of us from each europe, usa, and russia. use to come together to play serious games and tourneys, just slowly died, so depressing, nver again will i call to fire grapeshot from a junk ship bow before yelling to board and kill them all :(

great game when it came out that had so much potential but ultimately was made fun by the community.

its a very simple obvious reason. the devs abandoned ship. literally.
ghosted years ago and have no other projects

So what you're saying is.....
The game needs AI bots to fill in positions when there is a lack of enough human players.

Wish I could slap Ubisoft around and be like...

The High Seas of Black Flag, With the multiplayer gameplay of BlackWake, with your vast resources to provide an semi decent AI for all the different jobs on the ship.

No, im saying that if we can get people to begin playing again every day, eventually more people will begin joining. we need a solid community. I've been playing this past week and started seeing games with like 10 ppl again. I think it can work.
That would change nothing this is the fate of the game

This is a comment from the devs made in a youtube i just saw.

I was reminiscing and saw this as a result in 2022. A Cure for Death's comment got it correct. The game was everything we set out to build and then some. We didn't vanish, we did a final large news post on Steam going over everything added since release, and that we were going to slow down.

From the get-go it was never meant to be more than arcade PvP. Tacking on features that were not considered initially (or within reach) from a technical viewpoint risked not only the attention we gave the core game, but it also compromised stability.

We're glad so many people enjoyed the game, and while we did discuss further plans - ultimately, no idea had the same passion as what we'd already done. For us, that was a sign to not proceed with any. We've said it publicly in chat before, but I'll reiterate: As a two-person team, we were almost certain a larger studio would have come along and used BW as a reference to build upon the genre/idea in the ways many of our fans wished. Why that hasn't happened... we have no idea.

Take the review scores, multiply by like 4 or 5, multiply by the price of the game, then divide that by living wages for however many devs there are. Basically people need to eat or something.

I mean, SOT is the first kind of large company version of it which I am surprised never got more spinoffs.

Which is funny because the original CS:S map and the Roblox types of this were relatively popular if I recall at times. The similarish Roblox one has had 61 million+ visits between just 2 random ones I recall.

I wouldnt call it a flavour of the month game, it had a really successful EA run for a few years. Not every game needs to live forever to be successful or good.
