Look at the character designs - all the girls look different and are each a different breed of cat. That variety right there is a good starting point to build from. Add to that that the characters are believable and all higly likeable individuals that you could actually encounter in reality and you have a recipie for a great franchise.
And NekoWORKs is wasting no time building one
It can only be compared to the quality of the Wanko to Kurasou visual novel back in 2006. Even the Sakura series has interesting plot and character dynamics in the way they portray slice of life stories, everyday problems, character traits etc. I really felt the struggle in Sakura Beach 1.
The characters in Nekopara are well developed and lovable, making the reader grow attached to them and wanting to see what'll happen next.
Being an amateur writer of fiction myself, I sure can appreciate a good effort in writing when I see it. It doesn't have to be phenomenal in this kind of game. It just has to make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Unless you're a totally insensitive bastard that is.
As for the Adult content, personally, I couldn't care less. Maybe it has to do with my age (30+) but I'm kind of desensitized to pr0n. I've seen pretty much everything, so, I don't really care much anymore about that aspect of such games. That's why it is the story that matters to me.
Being an advocate of Polygamy in real life (it's the way of Nature), I'd love to see Nekopara becoming even more serious and plot driven in the future. I'd love to see how the protagonist will manage his life and relations in the future. How he will deal with all sorts of life's challenges and problems. And ultimately, how he will manage the passing of the years, old age, and the fact that Catgirls do NOT live long...
To summarize: Why do I believe that Nekopara is so popular and successful? Because in a world full of violent and competitive games, Nekopara chooses to make us laugh, make us cry, make us care and connect with its characters, make us FEEL, all the while catering to our archetypal sensual fantasies and desires.
If only real life was such a...Paradise.
I can somewhat imagine what the world would be like with catgirls were such a thing.
It wouldn't be good, at all. Not that catgirls would be a bad thing to have, as I would actually desire to have one. But I can see a lot of problems that would popup in society and in other subjects.
Good lord.
What have we done?
We did everything right.
All hail the glorious neko masterrace.
And i like the great art and the story
And maybe in the future
