Is there a way to build a basement?

I have wondered about the same thing. It has yet to be tested, but I think you may be able to add a basement by creating a room, then move one floor up and add an additional ground around the house.

It may or may not work, but I'll check it out right now.

EDIT: It worked!
By using the 2D-view, I was able to make new "land" around the house. I have left an opening by the staircase and added windows to illustrate.
