In order to build a foundation for the use of few stairs and porches this game offers, first you need to build a rough layout of the floor plan in mind. Adjust the height of the layout to the height of whatever object you are looking to use and then click "up" till you see the gray top of the room and build out your floor plan till your heart is content.
I have tried every way possible to create the foundation another way, but this way is the only way I have managed to get the door placement right at the flooring instead of having to put a landing on the interior.
I hope this helps!
