Are the religious themes alienating?
Seeking opinions from those non-religious types out there. I'm very interested in taking this feels trip, but I'm not overly keen on a two hour sermon. I've read that Ryan and his family are very religious and this comes through in the game, but is it heavy-handed enough to spoil the experience for someone who doesn't have any interest in being preached to? I ask because every review I've read has mentioned this element as a very significant one, so I'd like to know how it's handled.

I was wondering about this too. Knowing how irreligious the internet can be, I'm sure the thread will help others make a better-informed decision. It could have been just a bit more affable, though. Nevertheless, thank you for asking. (Those inciting dispute are part of a larger problem.)

Glitch, the dispute is what is called putting your grief out in public on the internet. Which puts it up for public debate. It's as simple as that.

As an atheist who is understanding of others' beliefs, I found the religious themes to be sincere to who the family truly are. It did diminish my connection with them somewhat because I simply don't believe in the same things, so maybe it didn't hit as hard. But if you have sympathy and respect for the beliefs of others then I think you'll still find there's a great experience to be had here, just be prepared to see a family with a lot of faith in God, there's nothing wrong with that.

Why as an atheist do you refer to their sky captain with a capital?

Because its grammatically correct, God is a name and therefore has a capital. Why do you care at all?

Yeah it was 2 hours I'm afraid, best to wait for it to go on sale, even though I enjoyed it, I wouldn't necessarily say it's worth the price it's currently at. You have to be a game like Journey, basically a perfect 2 hours (in my opinion) to justify that.

This will be the last post on this completely off-topic item, but grammatically correct according to what? Sky captain itself? Some people writing some book with made up stories about made up people? Who decides on this particular rule, and not to be a grammar general, but it's correct spelling I guess :). But you don't have to answer this one. I'm a full on atheist as you can see, so all this is irrelevant to me anyway.

Cheers.

Harry Potter is a made up character yet it's still written as "Harry Potter".

I have played it. I don't feel they were preachy at all. They speak of their faith in God to help cure their son throughout but it is nothing to shake your fist at. I'd be praying in that situation and I'm not even religious.

I feel it is no diffrent than playing any other game that has a religious view or undertone real or fiction.

I agree with Ben's post

Thanks for the opinions everyone, particularly Ben and LimitZero.

bFunk, you're giving atheists a bad name. You don't have to take every opportunity to insult/upset religious people. Saying things like "sky captain" and calling people out for capitalising a name is unnecessary. You don't believe? That's fine, nether do I. You're upset that churches pay no tax and get away with protecting paedophiles? Me too. But there's nothing to be gained by trolling people. If your goal is to win hearts and minds, that's the wrong way to do it.

Any time man, if you end up playing it then I do hope you have an engaging experience and feel it was worth it.

Not being rude but church has done no one any good ever, except maybe the church themselves.. they make a packet..

A name is a name, is it ben or Ben? Is it zeus or Zeus?

It's not religion, it's grammer...

I'm personally an athiest, I don't like being preached to either. But he's just telling a story of tragedy through how he views the world, so it doen't really bother me. The story as a whole is what I'm interested in and want all his veiws involved, even if I don't believe in them, so I know his personal experience.

My three-year-old son goes to a church-subsidized preschool. We're not particularly religious ourselves, but they've been teaching him and caring for him with patience and kindness. Being subsidized by the church also makes them affordable to us, which is extra nice when regular day care can eat up half your paycheck or more, even on a decent salary.

He'll learn what Christianity's about while he's there, and that's fine; let him learn, we'll teach him how we see things at home, and when he's old enough, he'll go his own way, same as I did.

And yeah, certain churches, the ones who make the news, have been caught in corruption or worse. But the ones who don't make the news do a lot of good you don't usually hear about. That doesn't mean "go to one," if you don't want to, but it does mean "don't assume the worst of other people."

Just sayin'.

Thought this "game" was interesting, thought of maybe buying it.

Then all the religion poured in and I instnatly lost all interest.

Sorry, but forcing religion down people's throats is silly, it ruined a potentially good story, and the developers (and alot of their fans) seem outright hostile to anyone who isn't religious.

I was a christian (or a catholic, I don't remember which, it's all the same anyways really) when I was younger, in highschool I started really thinking about religion due to going to a religious school, and some of the stuff the religious teachers said were really disturbing, and made little sense, and it got to the point where I thought "is any of this even true when it contradcits stuff I learn in other classes?".

And so after doing research and reading and learning, I became an atheist. Or maybe an agnostic, I don't really care for titles.

And apperantly, that makes me the devil himself acordding to these people, so, screw these ignorant people, no money for them.
