Game won't load at all.
Ok, I've gone through forum and tried all the little things, like compatibility mode, and still can't get it to work. All I get is the steam message saying that it is launching the game and then nothing. It simply crashes, not even a stalled process. I tried it on my laptop as well and the same thing. I running Win 7 64 bit and both computers have ATI cards of the 4000s type. I know I meet the system specs. Does anyone have any ideas?

Run Steam as an admin. Make sure no external softwares, such as anti-virus programs, are interrupting the lauch. Run DX setup again manually. Verify integrity of the game cache.

ran as admin, still will not work, will try the rest but not optimistic, maybe I am lazy but I hate jumping through hoops to make stuff work. Tried for ever to make Mass effect work and it never did. I believe when you buy stuff it should work, sorry, I guess I have a bad attittude

I may not be customer support, but what I found would work was to actually change your download server. That's Steam -> Settings -> Download tab -> Download Server Location.

I cannot guarantee this works for everyone, but apparently, the Chicago server had a file that was corrupt or incomplete - Steam itself realizes this, that's why when you try to validate files, it says a file didn't pass verification and has to be reacquired - and when it reacquires, it just downloads the same bad file, leading to the same crash. The only solution is to switch your download server - like I switched to the Detroit server instead - and either reinstall or re-validate.

changed download site, still will not work, gave error message. Tried to start it again, I don't even get the error message. I hate when I buy broken games

Same problem, tried switching download servers, did nothing, still have one bad file that needs to be reaquired, but it's still broken.

Downloaded the k-lite codec pack and that got it to work.

I installed that pack and it didn't work. Did the compatibilty mode and it started but gave me an application error saying is couldn't find a file?

For me, installation of K-Lite complete was the solution to run. I had some other newer separate codecs in my PC, and I was lack of older codecs. I have Win7 64 bit. Of course I set eh compatibility to XP SP3 and I run the game as administrator. I hope it helps. Dont forget to create a system restore checkpoint before K-lite.
