Win 10, Black Screen, Eventually Runs Issue
Hi. I bought this game a while ago and I am just now trying to play to make sure it works. I have read other posts here about the Black Screen and crashes, but they aren't quite what is happening for me. I get past the first couple of screens, until you see The Bard's Tale screen for the first time and then I get the Black Screen. Waiting doesn't do anything. However, I find that if I press CTRL+ALT+DEL a few times and click on an invisible something (my icon turns into a hand) in the middle of the screen, I eventually can pull up task manager. As soon as I do that, I can see The Bard's Tale icon at the bottom of the screen (task bar), as if the game is minimized. When I click on it, the game starts playing again. It seems to run fine after that.

I am happy that I can at least play the game, but I would like to find a solution incase what I am doing doesn't always work.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Many (including myself) have had this problem, but there is a mod out that forces the game to run in windowed mode (even though it looks like you are playing in full screen mode). You can find the mod here:

This worked for me, just unzip the file into your Bard's Tale install folder and run the game as usual. Let me know if this fixes it!

Thanks, that solution worked perfectly! I had seen reference to this solution earlier, but I wasn't sure it applied since I wasn't experiencing any game crash.

Thanks again!

I like it from the small test I did to make sure it was working and so I at least have a basic understanding of the game mechanics and controls. I like the humor. A lot of the old games have quite a bit of humor either in the game or in the game manuals. This one is the most I have seen in-game though.

I have played the same few games for so long that I need to finally start investing time in all the others I have. My problem is that I tend to binge play on a few games and look for games just like them. But I am giving each one in my Steam list a try to see which ones I want to focus on next while I mod some of the other games.

Thanks again!

There are a variety of free utilities and mods that do borderless window.

I picked this up either cheap or in a bundle some months ago and like it.
Worth the $4 to me, but mainly due to how much I use it and dev support.
It isn't perfect, but it is pretty hassle free, once you run it outside of the Steam Client (hint).

I have not tested it with the game yet... BT is on my backlog.

Hope this helps.
