can't take screenshots and steam overlay is super bright[SOLUTION]
Solution at the end of the post:

Ok, so it's basicaly what the title says. The built-in screenshot steam feature does not work for me and a lot of folks. At first we thought is was an issue with the HDR, but even after the last patch that allows us to turn HDR off, we can't still take screenshots. The steam overlay is working, but the screenshot key simply does not register, even after remmaping it. Also the steam overlay is super bright, like if the brightness would have been bumped a 300% up, and it's only in this game.

I'm openning this thread to see how many people more has the same issue. Post here if you have the issue, and also if anyone has a workaround for this, please share your thoughts.

At 35 seconds of this video, you can see the issue:

EDIT: I forgot to ask: do you all have nvidia GPU (maswell2 or pascal)? 'Cos I think it may have something to do with the nvidia HDR API layer that they are using. It seems people with non-HDR capable nvidia gpu or AMD cards does not suffer with this issue. Confirmation is needed.

EDIT2: Bingo! I found it. It's indeed the NVAPI HDR implementation by nvidia thats causing this nasty bug. I installed the oldest driver my Titan X supports, driver 347.88, that driver was before the NVAPI HDR implementation, and BAM! Screenshot works out of the box, and the steam overlay is not super bright.

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=855575949

Now I need a little help with this because I never reported a bug to nvidia, so I don't have a clue to where to start from.

EDIT3: OK, so it took me sometime but I found the latest working drive for screenshots to work. It happens to be the last driver before the HDR support was first added. Driver 358.50. Any driver after that and you have steam overlay super bright issue. With 358.50 you don't have HDR support. So it's clearly something with the HDR NVAPI implementation that gone wrong down the road.

Trouble is that it just happens with this game and ONLY this game. I've tested other games that has HDR support via Nvidia NVAPI: Obduction and Shadow Warrior 2. And there is no issue at all either with steam overlay or the screenshot feature if you disable HDR. Of course if you want proper HDR support for those games, you MUST use the proper drivers, as NVAPI HDR calls in driver 358.87 are incomplete and offer broken HDR effect on those games. But the fact that you can't take screenshots in RE7 with any driver above 358.50 shows clearly an issue with the HDR implementation. It doesn't affect GPUs that lack HDR support, like AMD gpus and any nvidia gpu below GTX960. And it affects windows 7, 8.1 and 10.

In other words: it's probably a bug in the Resident Evil 7 HDR implementation and NVAPI HDR calls.

EDIT4: Solution

Solution: just install driver Nvidia 381.65 or below 384.94 and you're good to go. You can take screenshots and the brightness is OK. But no HDR though. Its the driver with the windows creators update support, but as it was bugged, the HDR can't be turned on by the game. In other words, you can play the game without HDR and you're able to take screenshots, no matter if your screen has HDR support or not.

Thanks for letting us know. It seems a lot of people has the issue, but most of people don't come to this part of the forum. I've opened a new thread on the regular forum also, so could you please post there as well (if it doesn't bother you)? Thanks :)

At least I'm not the only one who's experiencing this annoying problem.
If the screenshot won't work using F12, this is bound to affect steam broadcasting, if you try to stream this game via steam, it would not work when users join, it will constantly say "Waiting for username to start broadcast" or something similar.

Yep that's my video and I am still having the issue. *cry*

Maybe a few more f bombs will help?

Not that it proves anything but I've had 0 people join my broadcast, which I would say isn't normal as people generally do join it even on old games.

For the process I've tried:
-Uninstalled the new drivers, rebooted, clean installed 376.33, rebooted again
-Uninstalled new drivers, and done a clean install of them again
-Verified RE7 game files.
-I tried copying the steam_api64.dll file from the RE7 demo folder - where all of these functions worked fine, and replacing the file from the game
-Reinstalled RE7
-Totally reinstalled Steam
-Switched between Steam beta and normal version
-Tried run as admin on both Steam and RE7 executable
-Tried compatibility mode for Win7 and Win8
-Deleted the steam_api64.dll and forced Steam to re-acquire it, several times.
-Manually created the userdata\userid\760\remote\418370\screenshots and screenshots\thumbnails folders to try to jumpstart the screenshot function, but neither that nor the overlay color will work correctly.
-Also have messed with hDR on and off, windows, fullscreen, triple buffering, vsync off/on, brightness, and anything else that made sense.

It's this game and this game only. Nothing has worked. I also restored nvidia control panel to default settings with no luck.

All I find online are threads that I made, threads with my own video in them, my own video, or threads where the topic gets totally ignored immediately. Also disabled anti-virus, all background programs evne including LGS which is driver suite for my keyboard, mouse, and headset. Still no dice.

I've seen similar threads where people had issues with this on Quake Live and Sims 3, and they say they just used windowed mode. I tried that, no dice.

The Sims 3 operates in a non-standard color mode.

Unfortunately, the Steam Overlay doesn't switch the color mode back and forth when it opens.

The workaround is to use Windowed Full-Screen Mode if you have a utility that can enable it. If not, just put up with it.

This is the only thing I think makes sense and it is what I was trying to say in my video. I think this game, because it uses BT.706 in addition to SRGB instead of just sRGB, is screwing up.

I've tried using borderless full screen through the game, as well as through a utility released a while back called Borderless Gaming. Regardless of which one, the issue persists. There is no way to change the color space to anything except SRGB or BT.709. either.

I've ALSO made sure my monitors are using the right colorspace profile - it happens on both monitors regardless of any settings which only reinforces that there is no possible way this could be an issue with our hardware or software.

Something about this game doesn't work correctly, that's all I can say,

I think so too, demo worked perfectly with steam overlay...

Indeed. It's upsetting. Sigh. Very few of us seem to have this issue. I don't know what's different with the people who don't.

Thanks for letting us know about everything you've tried. The thing about the colour space may be the issue. But we need confirmation from Capcom. The thing is they stay quiet until now about this, which is sad :steamsad:

I've managed to successfully contact steam support for this particular issue and see if they have a idea of what is going on, I'll update you guys whenever they respond.

Thanks, man! Let's hope for something good coming out of this.

At the moment I'm about to install the game on my old computer and see if the same thing happens.

I imagine it will as the old machine is similar somewhat:

New: Windows 10 Pro 64 bit, 32 GB DDR4-3200, GTX1080, I7-6700k, Evo 850 SSD
Old: Windows 10 Pro 64 bit, 8 GB DDR3-2166, GTX750ti, I7-860, Evo 850 SSD

Gotta get the stupid authenticator so gotta charge my droid. Not sure why this is a thing - both machines are authorized.

Well, I streamed to the old PC and the issue was the same. I am installing it on that machine now to see if the same thing happens.

Edit***

Okay so I installed on my old machine and the overlay works fine, no brightness, and the screenshots work fine.

Wtf.

I did a quick compare and there is nothing installed differently between the 2 that should make any difference. The drivers are on the old machine for Nvidia are from August 2016. So I rolled back to the August 15 drivers for the 1080, and the issue persists.

I also wanted to add some clarification. It isn't just Steam screenshots that won't work and a bright overlay. I've tried with raptr, afterburner and Fraps and none of the mtake a screenshot.

I just don't ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ understand. What do I need to do? Reformat Windows? Are you going to make me do that, Capcom?

This has happened to me after I accidentally deleted my re7_config.ini and the game created a new one so I'm guessing it has to be related to that somehow. I've tried deleting, replacing with the one from the demo etc and nothing has worked.

Hi. Are you talking about the super bright steam overlay, or are you talking about the screenshots not working?

Hi. Are you talking about the super bright steam overlay, or are you talking about the screenshots not working?

Both, I'm having both issues straight after deleting that file. I believe that since the file was previously created pre-patch it worked as it should and the new one the game created post patch with the HDR option at the beginning is now broken.

Also, I have taken plenty of shots before this happened, now I can't take a single one.
