If you're playing on Normal you should have enough ammo to deal with every molded in the game and then some.
That said if you truly are successfully blocking and headshotting you shouldn't have the trouble you say you're having. Try making some distance between you and the molded. Kite them a bit. And sometimes just go past them, it's an option too.
At the end I was drowning in ammo and healing items though.
It s really only this part where ammo can be tight and Ethans pathetic movement speed cant even outrun the basement cockroaches.
Hang in there fam, it will get much better from there, a tip i can give is, if there is a HUGE fight coming up in the basement, dont bother using guns, there is something the game throws at you to help you fight without firing a single shot.
I pretty much fought every enemy i encountered because lol movement speed and I still had plenty ammo from mid game on.
If you want to have a last resort. I m sure some loot is random so when you get a checkpoint before some crates, save and reload until you get the ammo drops you need.
Never had to this but probably would have done if I knew about the basement.
