Can’t even get past the first dude

Title lol. Didn’t play RE games in like two decades, but Village was so good that it brought me back to the franchise.

Problem is, I can’t even get past the first dude with the shovel. Found ammo near the TV but no gun. Can’t outrun him even at full health, he just grabs me from behind and punches me over and over. Tried to lure him into the kitchen and ran out the other door but in the hallway he tears down the wall and blocks you again (this is scripted?).

Tried to hide in the room next to the kitchen, but at some point he’ll yell: “ah, that’s where you’re hiding” and makes a beeline to my location, already aggro’ed.

Died a couple times and it was late so I gave up for the day. Am I missing some elementary gameplay mechanics here?

You can block with Space button, this will significantly reduce the damage you receive, you can also kite Jack around the kitchen doors, opening and closing them in his face. Grab the key on the counter down the hallway from which he comes and use it to open the trapdoor in the pantry. Jack breaking the wall is mostly scripted, but it can be avoided if he does not notice you.

Yeah, finally got him. I grabbed the key and hid near the garage door and he camped the dining area for like 10 minutes before he finally went for a round through the hallway.

Running to the safe room always makes him go away for a bit. I basically just explored until he saw me and then ran to the safe room, rinse and repeat..
