This game stands on its own. Looking for your wife. End up in a haunted house. You can really play any of them without having played any others. Put yourself in Ethan's shoes. he doesn't know anything about any backstory. It's the same with most of the games. One is Chris and Jill, what the hell is going on. Two is Leon and Claire, what the hell is going on. Three is Jill again, whoa what the hell is this. Zero gives us Rebecca and some dude, what the hell is going on. Four is Leon again, whoa what the hell is this. It's always something new and mysterious. Five and Six are kill it with fire and then hit it with grenades, if you like this game and want to play others you can skip those.

This game has almost nothing to do with the first 6, but dont play 8 without playing 7

It was a bit of word vomit but I was saying the games either give you a new protagonist (What the hell is going on) or it gives you a familiar character who has some new mysterious challenge to face (Whoa what the hell is this). By all means, start with RE2. You'll be fine. Start with any of them. Not knowing the backstory is what these games are about. Maybe play RE1 before 3 (Jill) and 2 before 4 (Leon). There's also Code Veronica so that's 2 before CV (Claire)

I can't speak to what Paul said because I'm playing this for the first time and haven't played 8 yet. I just got it the other day. But if the protagonist is different then it doesn't really matter. Be glad you're doing 7 first so you can really be Ethan. You're lucky.

You can play this game without needing to worry about previous series. Most of the part in this game is entirely new story. But if you want to play RE 8, it is advisable (but not necessary, because there is a recap video to help new players) to play RE 7 first.

I don't think you need to play RE 2 first, unless..... you really want to know backstory that bad, but the connection between RE 7 and previous games is so little......

RE7 opens an entirely new chapter that is very loosely related to the previous entries so it is safe to play first. Even if you had played the previous games you'd keep wondering "what does this game have to do with Resident Evil?" since any references related to the previous incidents of the franchise are almost non existent in RE7.

You can definitely play RE7 before playing any other game of the franchise, except RE8, which is a direct sequel of RE7.

RE7 has its own separate incident with its own characters. It's not related to the plot of the previous games, and requires no prior knowledge on the series' lore.

There are a few easter eggs to certain events and characters from previous games, but none of them are actually relevant to understand this game's plot.

RE7 is a good way to get into the series you could play RE7 and 8, then go on to play RE2 and 3 or maybe 1.

:)
It's a great game to start on. You'll get the follow up of Village to play too.
