Then why even make it a numbered entry into the series? Oh wait, because it would not sell as well it it was marketed as a side story, so once again a game dev trades money for quality ;D
4 years missing timeline.
RE7 events take place between October 2014 (Wrecked ship flashback and Daughters) and July 2017 (Main story + Not a Hero). End of Zoe is set on August since it says "weeks" after the main story.
The game itself will tell you the dates if you pay attention to the files and VHS tapes.
There's also a tiny reference to RE: Revelations. There's a book written by Clive O'Brian in the Bakers' living room.

Capcom stated before the game's release that RE7 is a direct sequel to the events of RE6. Picking up roughly two years after the events of 6.
(As far as appearance and voice are concerned, Chris has been changed quite dramatically, but that's happened to every recurring character to some extent)
