Dissection Room door won't open

I got the dissection room key from the incinerator. I put the key in the lock, then the door won't open. You can't push the door open or interact with the door at all after I insert the key into the lock. What am I doing wrong?

As far as i know this typically happens when players skip a few steps along the way. Is this your first play through? if so, dont worry just try to remember what you did leading up to where you are now and try back tracking to see if something happens that you might not have done before.
