Why I Won't Support The Resident Evil 2 Remake

First, I want to be clear that this post comes from my support for the voice acting community rather than blind fanboy bitterness. I won't support any company that doesn't have all of it's employees' best interests at heart.

I'm sure that by now most of you know that Alyson Court is no longer attached to the Resident Evil 2 remake due to the voice studio that Capcom chose deciding to go non union for the voice cast. I am aware that the recording contract was auctioned out to an external studio in LA. They control the auditions and who ultimately gets cast, but it is Capcom who gave them the contract, they bare the guilt as well. Judging by the fact that the studio had at one point reached out to Alyson before changing their minds suggests that the decision was financial rather than creative given the ongoing strike organized by the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. Fair wage is a genuine issue in the voice acting community, and companies trying to get around this by hiring non-union actors is, to quote Alyson Court; "petty and disrespectful".

Now, this isn't about one actor, one game or even one company, but rather it's about financial equality in the industry, and the guilt is wide spread. Everyone deserves a fair wage; developers, voice cast and motion actors alike, it's not like Capcom can't afford to pay the studio enough to meet the union's demands for fair pay and there is no doubt that this project inparticular will be a huge financial success, thats the whole reason they finally decided to go through with it in the first place.

RE2:R is still a long way off, as no voice work or motion capture has yet been done, so things may change down the line, but as it stands I will not support the game on release or any other game that casts non union simply to avoid having to meet the demand for fair wages.

The union can go screw themselves, when they quit whining like children that they aren't getting paid like hollywood celebrities, they might find less of their work being taken by people who don't think they're kings and queens of the industry and cannot be replaced. Equality in wages doesn't work in the real world, people get paid for what their positions are worth. Voice actors aren't curing cancer, they're sitting or standing (Oh no the torture!) in a booth repeating lines for a few hours, that someone more creative WROTE for them to READ ALOUD.

Just because you like the sound of a persons voice in a role doesn't mean a thing in a business sense, might as well get used to it until the entitled voice actors break their own backs under the weight of their sense of self worth, and reprise their roles in a future title.

Go screw yourself, it's a free market, not communism. If people don't like a product, they are free not to support/buy it, companies are not entitled to our money. If Capcom chooses to replace fan favourite actors with a bunch of nobodies, people a free to pass on their cheap, crappy game.

They worst part is that they actually offered her the job and wanted to sign her on until changing their minds at the last minute and going back on their offer to avoid meeting the union's request for fare wage in the voice acting community. It would be different if they had never contacted her at all, but asking her to do it and then backpedaling to save money is extremely disrespectful.

That is a good point. I unfortunately have been not paying too much attention to the REmake 2 progress, so this had flown under my radar.

Having just read about it on RelyonHorror, and watching Courts video on the subject, it is a shame. It seems the LA studio reneged, which is not nice to do after seeking her out for confirmation if she wanted the part.

I kind of hope Capcom can nullify the contract with the LA studio, or even mandate they go union. Perhaps a switch to the Vancouver localization studio may have been the better choice.

You'd have a point, if only it was another game that wasn't as highly acclaimed and anticipated as the RE2 remake. Playing "I'm more worthy!" games with her union buddies ended up costing her a job. I couldn't be happier someone who actually wants a job will be getting a shot at her character in this game.

Well, Capcom's decidion just ended up costing them a sale, probably not one. At least not until the game is like $10 in a bargain bin. If they can't even get their voice over right, I bet the rest of the game is probably a similar unworthy mess anyways...

This isn't about Alyson, I love her, but this isn't about her; this is about the fact that they chose not to support the union just to save money. Don't try to say that this isn't about money, because it definetly is. They had already offered the role up only to go back on it because they realised they could save some extra cash. I recommend that some of you look into the situation of wage inequality in the voice acting industry.
