You surely had to do the first chunk of the game with no ammo so replaying all that would hardly change anything.
If you have any RAMROD rounds, try to save them for shooting his heart to get him into the second stage with the spores, as the RAMRODS act as a magnum to him.
For me it took trial and error and learning what to use on him and when. Like using Incendiary grenades after he reaches his second stage, when he winds up his arm to close the distance between you, throwing a Incendiary grenade at this moment will stun him, giving you a few shots.
Was well worth it though. :D
When you unlock the Shield Machine, basically almost all enemies in the previous area's despawn, use this as an opportunity to re-visit these area's for ammunition, coins and the like, it'll make the end game much easier if you've missed any ammo. Be sure to proceed with caution as i've had a few enemies still be present in previous areas.
