You can use another weapon to destroy those, but i think it is a waste of ammo and time. I only tried it recently with unlimited ammo/enhanced rounds with the pistol. But i know you can do the same in Ethan Must Die with the Knife.
This. The bug part would probably be really difficult or wasteful without the Burner; after that segment, you can ditch it and the fuel in your box till your next playthrough.
As a combat weapon, I've never found it useful against anything other than the insects. Even with upgraded damage, using it on Molded in Nightmare mode always ends up with me getting hit at least once before the target dies.
