How to enable HDR on PC ?
Hi.

I have ASUS PG279 display and GTX 1080. HDR option is off by default in game options (it's "gray" and I can't turn on it)

I also tried change refresh rate, resolution (4K + 60 FPS, 2K + 60 FPS, 2K + 144 FPS) and HDR option still unavailable.

bla.... if you dont have a HDR capable display, youve never played in HDR. switch from sRGB to bt709 to have a better gammacurve on a SDR Display.

If you don't know what you are talking about don't comment please.
i had HDR on, i played with the HDR settings and even turned it OFF and back ON to see the difference.

And the difference is big, so big infarct i refuse to continue play the game until i figure how to fix it and turn it back ON.

I have no idea what happen... maybe Microsoft did an upgrade to ♥♥♥♥ ♥♥♥♥ up on Win10.
or something is wrong whit the game or the Nvida drivers.

ok sorry: so again, did you have a HDR capable display? And if yes, which one?

This!
:)
Is your display HDR?
If yes, which display & lets solve it.
If no, it wasnt HDR that made it look great, but something else.
(And yes I find the bt709 to be the better option)

*edit*

At the moment in this thread I can only confirm that 'TearN U Up's' display is HDR capable.....

ie: JS8500

Bought it for my PS4 Pro and HDR looks awesome. Best way to see HDR in action is to be in a dark corridor and look at a light bulb then switch HDR on and off. With HDR the light is super bright, super white and also super crisp and well defined. With HDR off it is a fuzzy yellow blob and the dark corridor looks too bright.

FWIW my Sony TV supports HDR10 but isn't 1000nits and it still looks waaaay better in HDR than without. I find UHD to be a bit meh to be honest (compared to 1440p anyway). HDR is the real reason to buy a new TV.

Then I heard that the PC version supports HDR. Wow! So I have a GTX1080 which supports it and thought awesome.

I installed the game but only had my Asus ROG Swift IPS monitor connected. The game loaded up and said "HDR mode is enabled". Epic fail as that monitor doesn't even support HDR and it looked messed up until I disabled it!

I then turned off the PC, unplugged my PS4 Pro from the TV and plugged my PC in. Set it up in NVIDIA control panel as well obviously.

Loaded up the game and tried to turn on HDR mode but it kept saying I wasn't in full screen - but it WAS set to full screen.

More playing around and changing the resolution from UHD down to 1440p and I got the HDR mode on........only all the colours are messed up and kinda green. On the brightness settings I kind of just had two green bars instead of red and blue! Play around some more and after 20 minutes it just randomly decided to work at UHD resolution.

It basically looked like the PS4 Pro version but with a lower frame rate - in fairness I had all the settings maxed from when I was using my 1440 g-sync panel. I could lower the settings but I fear I'd waste time each time I load the game trying to get HDR working.

So I'm sticking with the PS4 Pro version. Classic tale of PC gaming to be honest. Clean Windows 10 install and the latest NVIDIA drivers and it is just a pain in the backside from start to finish.

Not interested in the new Asus HDR monitor though as I suspect it is IPS (?) and I can't stand IPS glow and the total lack of contrast versus VA panels.

did you have HDMI UHD COLOR enabled on yout TV with unplugged hdmi cable? you have to do this to enable 4k@60Hz
Toypop 5 lutego 2017 o 13:48
Most TV's don't seem to work by default out of the box.

I had to go into my menus and turn on an enhanced HDMI option but its called something else on other brands. The Xbox One S does a nice little test which tells you when you have the full 4K 60hz 10 bit support enabled.

In NVIDIA Control panel I also had to change it from RGB to something else as that exceeds the bandwidth of the cable if you want to do 4K 60hz and I selected 10bit instead of the default 8bit.

You can still see some type of HDR its been used in games since the Half Life 2 addon. you just dont get the full HDR untill you get a HDR TV..

Interesting so after some more experimenting I've found that HDR works in UHD and 1080p.

However, my GTX1080 can't handle UHD well enough to avoid v-sync stutter on a TV without g-sync and 1080p is "ok" but not idea so the obvious choice is the middle ground at 1440p.

Yet if I select 1440p something goes badly wrong with HDR and all the colours seem to be lost apart from a greenish tint. Kind of a black and white and green.

Very odd because as I say it works fine at UHD or 1080p. Just something about the 1440p resolution that HDR doesn't like.

I do not have a 4k TV or whatever this HDR tech is, but the firt time I played the game after initial install I was able to enable HDR. HOwever, it looked like absolutely ♥♥♥♥. I had to choose the max brightness for HDR bloom Im guessing and the whites wouldn't go lower than 255 so it was full bright or worse. The grpahics look sreally realistic but if I looked at the sky too much the bloom was over whelming and the blacks were to black. The next time I played HDR was disabled and greyed out. I just assumed an update took it out because it really sucked and settgin didn't work rigtht. I checked the update news and nothing so I have no idea why I could access it first time but not after. Overall all I found first boot up of RE7 to be very strange compared to other games, in terms of thigns you had to set before even getting to the opening movie or main menu.

Even if the HDR mod is actually an HDR renderer (and not some combination of increased contrast+added bloom as is often the case when HDR is claimed), rendering in HDR for use with a SDR monitor is like colorizing a photo that will be published on a black and white newspaper.
Sure, be my guest.

HDR enabled automatically for me. Acer XB270HU ips gsync. gtx 1080 newest driver.

It does look better with it on.

Hmm... are you sure about that? I have the same monitor and it does not support HDR. When I look at the config options HDR is greyed out.

Acer's HDR monitor the XB272-HDR, is not even available yet as far as I know...

I also have the very same monitor. It's not HDR, so can't run it of course.
But you have clearly set it well, but true system level HDR is simply not available on this monitor.,
Limygeorge 3 listopada 2017 o 22:14
@OutR@ge: Sorry, read your later post that it was greyed out second time.

HDR causes confusion. Real HDR has a higher bpc. Our Acers are 8bpc (NV Contol panel shows that.)

I really like my Acer, the pictures quality is pretty outstanding. High refresh, G-Sync, IPS (not TN) was quite an achievment when this monitor was released. The year later XB271HU was also 8bpc.

Real system level full HDR (A colour depth over 8bpc) must be great.

It is the future indeed. But going by other posts there are only a handful of such monitors. Surprising really that there are any.
Certainly when our XB270HU was released there were no true HDR monitors (2+years ago).

But, I think you have the settings perfect for GPU and monitor, I know it looks great. It is just not real HDR. No idea what happened at first, perhaps an HDR signal was flagged, but whatever, 8bpc cannot play 10bpc or 12bpc properly. Simple Hardware spec.
A black and white TV can't show colour, but still works with colour signals. HDR is hardware first like in silly black and white TV analogy.

XB270HU is great ehh? I love it.

P.S. PC monitors have a grey scale of 1 - 255. TVs 16 - 235. Not sure the grey scale of HDR? But folks with HDMI and NV cards be sure to check in your CP that it's running at "full range." Not limited which looks a bit washed out on PC.
Problem is, HDMI often defaults to limited. So many people I know didn't know this. After changing to "full" they were amazed what they had missed! Worth checking, really check it!

A better analogy than my black and white TV one. Thanks.

How many people confuse software HDR with the panel tech. holy smokes.

Its kinda ridiculous really, just goes to show the piss poor job the tv / movie indusry is doing with promoting the tech to the casual market.

Also doesnt help that microsoft ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up the implementation on PC which in turn screwed nvidia and i presume amd way of doing it. Each driver release it seems to either break or fix HDR in games. It's hardly surprising devs seem to hesitate in supporting it in there games (looking at Assasins Creed for example)
