HERE'S HOW TO GET HDR WORKING ON YOUR TV
Original Post Edited As It Was Solved. Helpful Information Posted Instead :)

"So far I've only been able to get HDR to look decent and without banding by using 4k/60hz/4:2:0/12bpc
There is a still a little banding but it isn't noticable unless you're actually looking. This is due to the 12bpc output. It should be 10bpc but for some reason Nvidia doesn't have it as an option.

Btw, if your sky looks similar the left image and with rippling effects, that's what I mean by banding. It's not using enough color shades to properly blend so you will get a warped effect on subtle changes in color. It's very noticable in the opening cutscene on the white backdrop when you have HDR on but I believe that is due to the way they made the cutscene. Because in game it's much better.

ALSO, if anyone is wondering why you have to do these settings and why you can't just use RGB with 10 or 12bpc, it's because HDMI 2.0 has a bandwidth limitation. This chart shows what settings can be used. I would prefer using 4:2:2 but I've continuously had issues with Shadow Warrior 2, RE7, and all PS4 Pro games when using 4:2:2. Either my TV has a bug with it or game devs are making the games specifically for 4:2:0 in mind when they add HDR. Which, honestly, makes no sense considering the PS4 Pro defaults to 4:2:2. Someone at Sony would have noticed that before releasing the system rather than rushing it to market......... surely................. ;)

ALSO ALSO, make sure you're using an HDMI 2.0 rated cable and that your TV has 'UHD Color' mode activated. Some models have it as an option that is off by default and must be turned on for each port individually. I'm looking at you Samsung...

ALSO ALSO ALSO, if you're trying to just turn HDR off and are getting washed out brightness, this is a bug in the brightness settings. You have to turn the brightness WAY down in the display options menu after turning off HDR. It also seems that HDR turns itself back on when you restart the game, even though it will say it's off in the menu. "

And on top of this if I try turning HDR off in the menu, it washes out the color entirely. Restarting the game will then turn the HDR back on even though the menu says it's off......
Shadow Warrior 2 was like this at first also. The HDR was tacked on didn't work right at all. Anyone know of any combination of display settings to get it to look right?
Not sure I'm having the same issue, but the colors intermittently go from native to washed out when I change graphics settings in game.

Did you turn on the HDR settings on through your GPU control panel? Not just tv or monitor but control panel?
Absolutely

I don't have a HDR TV, yet when I turn the feature off it makes my screen massively bright
BigCNuggit Jan 23, 2017 @ 10:42pm
Solved one problem. The washed out brightness is because you have to manually turn the brightness in the game options way down after disabling HDR....... Of course......

You will need to activate HDR via graphics control panel on PC. It is not automatic from TV to PC. Let me know
how and where do i do this i have radeon.

Ok, y'know what.... I need to get into games further before I decide there's an issue..... So, I thought there was banding with HDR because of the white backdrop of the opening cutscene. It didn't look good. But I finally gave up playing with settings and went along into the main game and it actually looks GREAT once you're in control.

So, basically, if you're not familiar with HDR but are playing on an HDR display, all you have to do is get 10 or 12bpc color depth running in your GPU's control panel. If you're going for 4k/60fps, set your color format to 4:2:0 and your color depth to 12bpc (for some reason Nvidia only lets me choose 8 or 12bpc, it should be 10 though). If you run 30hz, you can get away with 4:4:4/12bpc. Limitations of HDMI 2.0 and all..... Technically, I would suggest 4:2:2 instead of 4:2:0 but some TVs have issues with it. Samsung specifically. Playstation 4 Pro has AWFUL banding on its default 4:2:2 output on my Samsung but 4:2:0 looks fine. So I recommend the safe bet but you can always play around. What matters most is getting your color depth at 10 or 12bpc.

So my problem was actually non existent, but hopefully that bit of info helps some people.

i cant set to 4:2:2 theres no 4:2:0 and hdr is still greyed out for me. Again, hdr works fine for me on ps4 and on shadow warrior 2 but its not recognizing it in this game. >:(

Dunno what you're talking about, but it's completely automatic on my TV. It's so automatic, that even setting my TV to be unable to display HDR prompts me to restart the TV to enable it once the game launches. Shutting it off in game after it starts just makes the screen look all washed out and as if the gamma got turned way up. Adjusting in game options and TV settings doesn't fix it either. The implementation of HDR with this game is shoddy at best. You're forced to use it on a TV that can run it, and while it looks nice, so do games at 1440p without it that I can run at 60fps. Can't run 4K with a constant 60fps with this game (it hovers around 45fps).

Can't select higher than 8-bit at 4K, even in 4:2:0 on my GTX 1080, and my TV goes higher than that.

edit: Actually, the control panel is just screwed up. I have to lower my Hz to 30, then can select 10 or 12 (which screws with text colors) and then raise it back to 60hz. It doesn't help with the horrible banding at the start of the game either.

im having some HDR issues iwth my samsung ks8000. The picture seems very dark with HDR switched on. When turned off, the screen goes very bright, and turning down the brightness in the game options makes no difference. Im forced to play with HDR switched on because of this. Ive tried accessing colour options on my gpu (gtx 1080) control panel but cant find what you mention in your posts. Can someone help please? Thanks.
