I grabbed the stabilizer and steroids first (and the key of course) and got the assault and defense coin just before entering the mines. Can't say I noticed any difference, but I was also in such a good position by that point it just didn't matter anyway.
I imagine the assault coin is good to get early on (if it actually increases damage) but I'm just not really clear on how much it impacts things.
It also sucks that you have to give up an inventory slot for this item of questionable value.
Like what percentage increase does things like this or the defence coin add?
Same with Steroids, are they increasing my HP by 5/10%? On Madhouse I couldn't really see a difference in the amount of hits it took to kill me, so I instead just regarded steroids as another full Health recovery Item.
Clueless about the coins. I started with one of the defence coins (Preorder bonus I think?) and the Assault one is the first thing I bought after the Scorpion Key.
Had the Assault coin with me for the entirety of the game after I got it, and I used the Double Barreled Shotty/Pistol Combo 99% of the time.
Now that I think about it, I literally never even fired my Grenade Launcher or Magnum (This was my first run so I didn't have the Albert or Saw weapons); and I'm now seeing a bunch of threads here on the forums where people who do actually have all these other unlocks are still finding Madhouse hard and are running out of ammo, whereas I ended the game with essentially more ammo than I could carry... So I'm inclined to believe that this does make a subtle difference in the long run when comparing the relative ease I had compared to others.
Obviously though that's a very rough and non-scientific method of looking at it. Would be great to get some cold hard mathematical and numerical breakdowns of these things.
well the circular saw is so damn powerful it made madhouse pretty trivial for me. I think some people are just bad at rationing their supplies.
I tend to take ♥♥♥♥ in the other direction and am bad at not just stockpiling everything and refusing to use it.
**Spoiler alert**
On Madhouse Jack follows you around the house, he only disppears when you enter safe rooms or go to anothe zone (Scorpion door) or such. Using the Circular saw on him allows you to bring him down and he will only get up after a while so it buys you a lot of time.
For the "crawlers" the circular saw is a 1 hit kill if you aim at the head. For the regular ennemies, it's not amazing. You still have to block and dodge their swipe attack and their charge or you will go down.
For the bosses (doing the Madhouse run right now), it does wonders versus Jack in the Garage, for the rest it's not amazing but it helps a bit.
I guess its also true that the saw + the blocking items together are what make-up the indomitable combo. I used the circular saw on all 3 jack fights.
If you want to preserve the integrity of the madhouse difficulty mode I suggest doing it with no special items at all the first time.
Went back to Madhouse again and gave it a go, wasn't a fan of needing to get up close and personal.
Ironically enough I did better on my first blind run with no unlocks by safely shooting the enemies from afar. Jack stalking you in the beginning is incredibly easy to avoid really, never wasted a single bullet on him and exploited the saferooms.
Weird, I only ever took damage once I tried to use guns. Infinite safe blocking + circular saw just seemed ideal.
I just remember on a subsequent MH play through past the first Scorpion door, trying to block/Saw the two licker molds there and getting destroyed. Think one of them maybe maneuvered around behind me during a leap or something.
On my first blind run of the game with no unlocks I just took them down without much fanfare at all. Maybe I got incredibly lucky headshots.
Did you use the swing or the constant spinning saw in front of you attack? the leaping molds were trivial with a infinite spinning saw in front of me.
Oh, truth be told I kind of forgot that this game had the 'hold right mouse button and click left' for melee attacks, apart from the jack Chainsaw fight when the tooltip pops up. Only really used the knives for breaking boxes, never for combat.
I probably just left clicked a few times and got the swing animation for the hand saw. Tried it on a regular mold or two also and generally found it pretty underwhelming.
Maybe I'll go back and try this constant attack.
