Behavior of Jack and other members of the family
I'm playing on normal.
1. Are the encounters random? Do they ever end?
2. How to successfully hide from him? Whenever I try losing him he always finds me out, even with closed doors etc.
3. Where to hide in a room?
4. Can Jack go through the narrow slits you can walk through after opening a wall using the piece of wood and such?
5. Are there places of the home where you can be certain Jack won't appear? Like the basement.

1. no. yes.
2. you just have to run for it
3. see 2
4. no (but he might know another way in..)
5. yes, the rooms with storage trunks and tape recorders are safe rooms.

1. When do they end? After how many encounters?
3. Some people said near the walls and in shadows.
4. So technically while you're IN the slit you're pretty much safe, right?
5. And aside from that? Are there any?

Protip: stealth is based entirely on sight, noise has no bearing on being detected. Proof being shooting an unaware Jack or Marguerite and missing is somehow fine.

Asking what parts of the game are safe and where people appear kind of ruins the point of playing, doesn't it?

This is pretty much what I've discovered, too. You can bash the walls all you like, they won't come. Treat them as deaf killing machines, like a great white shark underwater, and you're pretty much there. Especially on Madhouse. This ain't Outlast.

Well, he asked for it.

They end after the fight in the dissection room where you cut Jack in half with a chainsaw. Happy?

Why do you bother? Not knowing this would result in me loading some scenes over and over again and it'd break the immersion.

Thanks to everyone. I'm at this point where I want to get a shotgun. I open the Scorpion doors in the main room and then, upstairs, I see him going after me. So I run through the rooms and close every door behind me and then I walk into granny's room. Bummer is, I can barely loot it since he busts the door open a second later.

Shoot him in the head with your gun. He goes down.

Not entirely true as I found out on a test I was doing towards the start right before you unlock the first safe room. On one test I let him get into the dining room area and then once I was past the doorways I ran to get the key versus walking. I turned around and he was coming up the hallways after me. Re load and do the same but walk and he just goes through some pathing in the dining room area and has to "see" you.

Rather odd that he would be able to hear someone running but not sense a gunshot simply because it missed.

But then he says something like "I'm good now!" 2 minutes after.

Knowing exactly what to expect is itself immersion breaking.

Well, I did a test of my own, which was ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ the walls up with the circular saw for about twenty seconds, and he was very nearby and still couldn't work out where I was. So maybe running does attract him, not sure. But every other noise certainly doesn't seem to...
