The only things I can tell you are to listen for Caleb's digging and hissing noises and run from that. As long as you keep as far away from him, you can have time to stay still to avoid Tom. Tips to avoid Tom:
When he slides into view, look directly above you. It's the fastest way to get rid of him but only when he slides in, I'm pretty sure.
Sometimes, when he spawns while you're moving, and he's keeping with your pace at the side of your vision, I found that you don't even have to stop, just keep running forward, try not to turn hard. He'll go away eventually. Sorry if this doesn't make sense, it's hard to explain.
That's all I got for now, I hope you've gotten it, if not already.
Also, now I'm 100% sure this is luck based. Just tried it again right now and finished the hour. And the funny thing is, Caleb didn't appear a SINGLE time. It was Tom all night long (and Tim appeared once) and he dissappeared real quick even when I was out of matches, and never as a pair (which had happened every single time on the past tries).
People should make a sticky or mention this in a guide since you'll be wondering just what you're doing wrong or if the game is broken. Basically, you'll win if the game wants you to (no pairs/trios attacks, plenty of candles near you, no spawning in the cottage/bus. etc). If it doesn't feel like it, well, better luck next time.
Though one thing I still don't get about Tom is why he kills you many times even if you're not looking at him and he clearly didn't spawn in front of you either. Earlier I decided to watch some playthroughs on YT out of frustation and noticed this happened to other people as well. They just went WTF just happened.
