I think research for Polaris is one thing that will take the longest to get used to as its very different to most other games. But I think once one gets an idea of a few choice early research projects to get and a feel for how to best progress it it should prove quite simple.

I guess we'll figure out an optimal research order soon enough.

For now I'm simply enjoying the fact that I have the choice between focusing and researching a bit of everything at the same time.
Can't recall a 4x that ever let me do that before.

Most are strict with research - I think if I recall right that Star Ruler did a slightly more unique tree; but most are pretty standard. Sword of the Stars had a simple tree, but random items on that tree so you might not have gotten all of one branch - it made trading for tech important but also meant that weapon choices would vary since you might not get all of one gun type in your selection - although most core choices were present.

So far I find that I like to get the colony option in polaris that lets you colonise a wider number of worlds; that I prioritize early since combat isn't essential then (I don't play with pirates on hard yet). That way one can get a few more than just "perfect" worlds at the start.

yeah i tend to grab the first level of colonising as well for extending my early planet taking ability and there by giving me a longer reach for fuel. not a huge fan of using tankers and a colony will act as a refueling point without needing any extra buildings, after that i tend to push for marine food bulding then either engines or generators.

aso opening up those less than ideal gives you more oppertunity to ♥♥♥♥ block the other empires with border control, i love how the borders work in this where by having control of the access points gives you controlk of all the worlds there. hate it in other games where they just leap frog your controlled space and colonise your back line. i will prioretise colonising a ♥♥♥♥ planet over a quality one if it gives me border control over a large area that i can colonise later.

Aye getting those early worlds is key; otherwise you leave yourself open to losing territory and also key resources. And as you say its ideal for keeping you exploring without needing tankers- esp as the time to build a tanker is not inconsiderable compared to colony or scout ships.

ads a nice bit of stratigic planning, do i grab this earthlike world here and get it upgraiding or do i throw down 3 colony ships on ♥♥♥♥ worlds to get a region under my control that i can colonise later. and getting out there and finding the choke points that allow you to bring large amounts of territory under your control is vital.

Yeah, making more planets available is key early game.
Either by research or by sacrificing a few points at creation and picking the radioactive ability.

I play on normal with pirates, so colony rushing can be slightly risky but usually works out.

Agreed.
Early game I don't actually go for the best planets, I go for the ones that allow me to block off the most territory for later colonization.

Sometimes I get greedy and accidentally block too close to another race's homeworld, which leads to angry demands or war and probably slows me down more than settling a bit further away would have.

I tend to focus on choke points, but also on resources with high resource wealth to them. My view is early game you want those rich worlds - this game really shines with planets with a strong singular focus; so resource rich worlds are ideal worlds to focus on mining to really bulk up your income. A strong income can fund a war effort and ships later to defend and hold and expand.

Distant worlds for me is more a meta game wher you have to think big and long term and auto-manage.

Its bigger and has more different resources.

Other + side for DW is in my opinion : It had some solid expansions and very clear mod document and thread from the begining. For me the strenght of DW is that its 2D art and easy to modify. It gives the opertunity for more people to try and mod something in it.

Polaris feels like a unique mix of Master of Orion and Star drive II And some unique and original mechanics: Science , Un-assembling ships and stations andAssembly them in an other Orbit , The planetary management is different, And Espionage is different as wel. I find the AI challenging with moments.

The - Side i fear will be the modding part for Polaris.
Ok I admit im still poking into it how to add a race but the guides provided are not streamlinded for newbies. ( I hope for a Battlestar Galactica in the near future )

And I wonder where i will get the 2,5D , 3D art ... Empire at War Mods ? I fear it will be a smaller mod community for this game beause of the 3D.

Polaris for me was one of the better 4X games /2016.

Master of Orion was good, Star Drive II im still not clear what I think about it, GC3 felt like a remake ... , Star ruler 2 was not my cup of tea , Predestination was a refund request.

The only thing that I would love is too have A hybrid game between Polaris and Distant worlds with planetary control and warfare like Empire of the Fading Suns that would be awsum.

I think this year could be very wow when you see what is still coming out.

Stars Beyond Reach & Stellaris really poked my intrest.

If the private economy ships worked better in Distant Worlds worked better I would not complain about DW. I would just like to be able to have SOME manual control of freighters and be able to set up regular supply/trade runs that the private economy could follow. It can be very frustrating to pick up a distant space station with a construction yard and then watch a long chain of your freighters start heading for it with multiple loads of the same cargos, and also watch a long line of your ships heading to a distant neighbor Race to refuel their ships. It is very easy in DW to have new built ships unable to fuel themselves where they were built and take a long time getting to where they can get fuel. In fact, I make a point of keeping my freighters using a different fuel type than the rest of my ships because of that problem.

That is why it is a private sector Dray. I think DW works it well. I don't automate anything throughout the whole game and just enjoy the heck out of the story that unfolds. DW was meant to be played slow, and it is the best 4x experience out there IMO :)
