I own and like both.
Polaris is way more focused about military and Fleet Management. You will spend a lot time Designing Ships and fleets and organize Carrier Groups with houndreds of fighters. Polaris also covers ground combat with a variety of units.
ISG is more straight forward in that regard.
The maximum possible galaxy in ISG is also way smaller than the Max Galaxy Size in polaris if that matters to you.
I have also both and I would recommend also both.
Polaris Sector takes longer than ISG!
You have to manage so many things here, and its about logistics (ships getting to the point where you want them) while in ISG you have more insight about the planets. PS is not that much caring about planets I would say...
Because the non-sensical nature and complexity of the ship design "tetris", the AI also cheats and is totally exempt from it.
Anyway, whenever I come back to this game, that's what always ends up driving me away again.
it is someway hard to get into it.
by the way, I am still waiting for distant worlds 2...
as a side note, i can recommend space empires 4 :-)
easy to build the ships, cheap, and hard to master, at least thats my opinion.
right now it costs 1,99 in the deluxe version...
I will add that the different compotents require different resources. So if you find your empire to be short on anything in particular can also be forced to be selective which compotents you use.
And a lot of the weapons arent straight replacements.
