Would be nice if this can be fixed to pick the save up on steam deck where one left off...
Changing Deck`s version to using Proton (Windows version) may solve issues.
Hello from the future. I came across this while trying to figure out why the steam deck uses an older incompatible version. Your solution (so far) has fixed this for me. For completeness sake for any finding this, these are the steps to change the deck to use the proton version:
1. Select your chosen game from the Steam Deck library carousel.
2. Navigate to the settings cogwheel on the right side of the game page and select it.
3. On the pop-up game settings menu, navigate to and select Properties.
4. In this game properties screen, choose Compatibility from the left-side menu.
5. Check the box titled 'Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.'
6. From the new drop-down box underneath, select your desired Proton version.
7. Return to your game and check for updates if it doesn't happen automatically.

Thanks again for suggesting this fix, I can now happily save and load files between my 2 devices!
