Game crashes/freezes on start up.

So far I haven't been able to get past the "Made with Unity" screen that shows as soon as I open the game. For a couple seconds the game seems to be loading, as the typical three dots that indicate something is loading appear. Then I hear a splashy sound and the game freezes/crashes. No error message pops up, the game just stays like that until I alt+f4 or tab to close it.

I've tried running as administrator, running in compatibility mode (win 8), running as administrator in compatibility mode, running directly from where the game is installed, reinstalling, reinstalling with windows defender not running. None of this has worked.

I can alt+enter to make the game go windowed mode, if I do this a black screen happens, if i go back to fullscreen the black screen remains.

I'm not a native english speaker so if I wasn't able to explain myself properly, please tell me an I'll try to give more info or explain better.

Try this:

1. run regedit.exe
2. goto "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Daedalic Entertainment GmbH\ShadowTacticsBladesoftheShogun"
3. change "Screenmanager Is Fullscreen mode" to 0, which means turning off full screen mode
4. change "Screenmanager Resolution Height" to "384", which means setting height to 900 pixels
5. change "Screenmanager Resolution Width" to "5A0", which means setting width to 1440 pixels
6. start the game, and the error has gone

after the first-time running, registry will be reset by the game, but it's okay and there's no need to modify them again.

By doing this the game opens in windowed mode, but when the splashy sound comes it goes back to full screen and it freezes/crashes. like before. "Screen is full screen mode" goes back to 1 automatically.

Worked fine for me (Windows 10, 64 bit)
The first time I was running the game after applying this workaround the game crashed as usual.
The second time it startetd, but the mouse pointer was restricted to a 900x1440 pixel area in the middle of the screen.
I started a third time and everything was fine.
Since then the game was running smoothly

I ended up just reinstalling windows, works fine now.

Anyone else has a more "elegant" solution besides reinstalling windows?I have the same issue as @Panthera, but in my case the loading unity screen (game window) just closes after 1-2 secs, and i can relaunch (Play) game again on Steam with the same outcome.
I also tried the regedit fixed mentioned by @Cyatic with no success.

this is the only game i bought from Steam and asked for refund. I had the same problem and it seems it is easier for them to refund me than give a solution to my problem

I haven't found a fix yet either, no biggy as I got the game free somehow. Hopefully they will fix it some day because it looks fun.

The Regedit worked for me with no issues. After changing the settings, it took 3 loads:
1) Opened in a windowed mode and crashed.
2) Opened in Full Screen and worked, but the mouse was limited to middle of the screen. I then exited.
3) Opened in Full Screen and everything works!

... on to the last mission.

it was the same for me, what it worked was changing the compatibility of "ShadowTactics.exe" to windows 8 and that solved the problem.

I have the same issue as per the main post. I'm using win11. and I think just changing the compatibility solved my problem.

After playing this game for days mine just black screened over and over today when launching. Came here looking for fixes but realized i had an xbox controller connected to the PC which is not normally the case - i turned it off and the game started up fine. Weird.
