Shadow Tactics vs Desperados III
Hi guys, I have the demos for both Shadow Tactics and Desperados III. For anyone who has played and completed Shadow Tactics, and has also played the Desperados III demo, would you recommend I buy Shadow Tactics or Desperados III if I can only get one, and why?

Shadow Tactics is often on sale (it's 75% off on Humble at the moment), so if you want to save money then you could get that. Play that for a while then pick up Desperados 3 on sale!

Yeah I saw it on sale. Wasn't sure if people would recommend just skipping it and going straight for Desperados or not. (I'm not even sure how much it would be in a sale given it is so new). I am also hoping to get Hitman 2 on sale but again, not sure how much that will be either, so difficult to plan.

By the way (in case you haven't noticed) there's a demo of Shadow Tactics as well - it's the first two missions and you progress will carry onto the full game if you decide to buy it, so you can always start there without spending anything

Yeah, like I said in the original post, I have the demos for both ST and D3. I was just wondering if people thought ST was worth it or whether I would be better off going for D3.

My bad, didn't notice that bit!

No worries, still interested to hear peoples' thoughts!

'Shadow Tactics' is the game that made me a fan of tactical rpgs like this, so I cannot recommend it enough. If, however, you want a game with a little more action (as Shadow Tactics heavily relies on stealth) then I'd go with 'Desperados 3' which seems to give you more freedom in that direction. Also, 'Desperados' seems as though it has improved on some of the previous game's mechanics, such as giving you a 'pause' button to set up actions and setting some missions indoors, as well as letting you wander around towns unmolested.

I encourage you to play them both but if your money is limited then I'd say go with ST until Desperados is on sale.

Keep in mind that the Steam summer sale is just around the corner, so you’ll probably get big discounts on Shadow Tactics and Hitman 2 then.

Shadow Tactics is superb, by the way. It’s a must-buy even if you do choose to get Desperados 3.

Yes, I really liked the Shadow Tactics demo, I was just not sure if people who had played through the full ST game as well as the Desperados demo thought that D3 was so much better as to make it worthwhile skipping Shadow Tactics and going straight to D3.

I am hoping Hitman 2 will be in the sale, but I am not sure if it will or how much it will cost..? Shadow Tactics looks to be on sale already at Humble Bundle and another site (I think it's ~£8.75), do you think it will be any cheaper in the Steam sale?

I think this is what I am leaning towards currently. I liked the demo of ST and it is on sale at the moment over at Humble Bundle.

For $5 you can get a monthly subscription to 'Xbox Gamepass for PC' which gives you access to 'Shadow Tactics' and over 100 other games, many of which are worth playing. Even if it took you two months to beat the game, it'd cost you no more than buying it and you'd be able to play other games in the meantime.

Oh wow, I had never heard of that before. I suppose if you stopped the subscription in the future you would lose access to the game/games?

The gamepass deal sounds great if you are able to play a lot of games. At the moment I can only really play on weekends so I'm not sure how many of the other games I would realistically be able to play. Have you found that to be an issue?

It’s a subsription. Of course you lose acces to the games if you lose your subscription.

You’re the only one who can answer the second question. How are we supposed to know how much you can play, how fast you play gakes, and what you consider good value.

I guess I would recommend shadow tactics first. Considering Desperados has the desperados mode, it would be wise to play shadow tactics, then shadow tactics on hardcore mode while getting the difficult achievements, and then getting to desperados, playing it on hardcore, and then have replay value with desperados mode (since they say desperado difficulty shouldnt by used first try even by good player)

But that is my addicted mindset speaking here, if you want to get as much fun out of the game as possible.

ST is on sale a fair bit; Desperados preorder is quite good, including 3 dlc missions. If you haven't played this kind of game before, but you like the demos, get the genre you prefer - Eastern or Western.

BTW, as for the pause mode in D3, there is a guide for ST that puts pause into it.
