really wishing all the dialogue was "subtitled"
i know you can turn on subtitles for some of the incidental dialogue in the game, but not all of it. specifically it does not give you any of the little things your characters say when you give them commands, or when they murder people, or hide, or, well, most things when it comes down to it. the only thing the "in game text" adds is dialgue between characters, hints or some npc chatter.

thing is, i REALLY want to listen to this game in japanese, i love the voice acting much more than the english voice actors (although they do a fine job themselves), especailly the japanese girl they have for yuki. she's right out of an anime and i love it.

i dont speak japanese, but i love the sound of it, especially in a setting like this one. i put the language to japanese and the text to english and its like playing an anime. very cool. only there is a lot it does not translate. which is frustrating. granted when playing i dont always see the text anyway, but i often can catch it if its on the screen.

even an option to put all the subtitles along the bottom of the screen, would be awesome!

either way, great game so far (if rather unstable on mac).

Maybe start up a single mission in English and test out each of the characters' moves so you can hear what the "barks" mean? As someone with proficiency in Japanese, the translations are very close. For example, Yuki says something like "a mouse's fang" when using her dagger, which is exactly the same as the Japanese.

Honestly, you're not missing too much; those barks get VERY repetitive after the first few times they say it, no matter what language you're on. I think I would go crazy if subtitles for them popped up every time I used an action or made a character move.

there is some truth to what you say, and ive thought about that. running each mission firsrt in english then swithching to japanese for the badges.
at the moment ive just been running it all in japanese to ge the sound right even if i only get to know a very small part of what they are saying.
the challenge is, with so much dialogue not being translated it makes it harder to notice when suddenly it IS being translated, and so i often miss the text come up because im not looking for it.

Not too sure what you mean by that; really, the only "dialogue" that is untranslated are the barks, which barely even count as dialogue.

yes all the barks and what not, but there is a lot of them (more than any other dialogue in fact), so there is an almost constant chatter going on that is not translated. it may be repetative, but it is happening so often it becomes part of the soudscape for the level. add to that all the NPC dialogue that happens off screen so you cant see the speech bubbles. this means that when suddenly it IS being translated, it is less noticable, because i am so used to just hearing it as background noise. if i understood it all it would be easier to notice when it is new information, but as it is it is mostly a wash.

because of this, ive taken to running the missions themselves in english, and switching to japanese for level transitions, or cut scenes (when i can anticipate them). the english voice action is pretty solid so its enjoyable either way.

I had the same thought... For me, the Japanese audio just adds to the overall atmosphere; really wish there were complete subs. Oh well, still a great game.

Just if anyone else finds this thread later because they have the same issue:
There is a setting for in game subtitles, just go to options > gameplay and enable "In-World Text".

Not sure if it got added in later but it's there now.
