Yes, hold down the D key (or whatever you've set his key to)

It's not clear how to control Kuma directly. I did it before, now I'm not sure how and Takuma keeps wandering off when I try to direct Kuma.

tap D to get tools to direct Kuma to a location. If You have to place the dot representing Kuma within the yellow circle for Takuma to stay in place. If you place Kuma out of the range, then Takuma will walk until he gets close enough to place Kuma where you asked. Once you click a location, takuma will go run to get there. It can take awhile sometimes, but you can see Kuma running on your map if he is not visible. to use Kuma, press the T button. there is no range. To call Kuma back press and hold D until you hear Takuma call for Kuma to return.
