As for perks, I believe they're gained by just doing what their bonus is. So for ramming perk, you have to keep ramming ships to keep it. The first one is long range shooting. The others I havn't figured out yet so maybe someone else will chime in.
When you log in, they all appears 0%, if you have accumulated some before, after a battle or use of the ammo type,
they will reappear.
1st. Hawk. Shooting normal ammo from long range.
2nd. Ram. need no explainations.
3rd. Spider. Using Shrapnals to destroy enemy sails.
4th. Think its smoke bombs. unaware what creature is that.
5th. Snake. Poison Ammos. Hardest to maintain.
When you use they incre, if you stop using they decrease.
Green %, is Able to Buy Items at a lower markup price.
Red %, is Able to Sell Items at a higher price.
Ammo not included in the discounts.
1. Sharp Sighted Hawk: +20% long range accuracy.
2. Mouflon: 3x more powerful ramming.
3. Paralyzing Spider: 2x damage to sails.
4. Timid Hare: +3 speed and +2 manouvering.
5. Poisonous Asp: 2x poison cloud duration of poisonous cannonballs.
As to how you obtain these perks... Follow the hints in the descriptions. The animals fit the required behaviour.
And yes, you can have them all at once. Happy strategy switching!
Personal Reputation from left to right
1) get long range guns and snipe more
2) ram more
3) use chain shot to disable ships more
4) run away more from combat (watch for morale hits though)
5) use poison rounds more
you get roughly 0 .5% per random encounter (sometimes slightly higher in 2 faction encounter and flying one of the faction flags though I've not seen more than 1%) and once you get over 100% you'll get bonuses related to the skills/eq used which will increase the higher your %age climbs.
When you first start out you're given a really high Personal Reputation for ramming so you have extra damage modifiers which pair with the short range guns you have. This slowly decreases as you use other play styles. I believe it's calculated by damge dealt by type
