Tempest
Can you capture ships in this game?
And if you can, can you use them and/or add them to your tiny fleet to roam around looting and pillaging?

You can but they just sit around in ship selection menu doing nothing. Usually you sell them for a lot of gold. Or you can switch to the captured ship.

So you can't have a tiny fleet that follows you?

No, you're pretty much on your own unless you're fighting with two factions and decide to hoist one of their flags to have them help you.

*sigh* Well. That's one out of two things I wanted, and that's more than enough for me.

Sea Dogs: Caribbean Tales has the features you're looking for.
Though is has no Kraken, no Undead, also it is typically harder to play and succeed in, but if you do well, you can capture forts, run a fleet or trade.

Tempest is faster paced battles, undead, kraken and other mythical creatures and easier to play.

So you're saying this is more like a way to get used to this style of gameplay.

Yeah, it's a good introduction to pirate games, it lacks features other more advanced ones has, but it's not stupidly simplified to make it boring.

I'd definitely recommend Tempest for any pirate enthusiasts, if it's your first Naval combat game, it'll be great training grounds :)

You can have a fleet if you play with friends. My room mate and I got this a couple years ago to play co-op. There's a lot more depth to this game than people might think, but you have to become allied with at least one faction before you see any really cool stuff.

My ship is a ghost galleon with a blood wake. It's covered by shields, and it has extremely long range, excellent turning time, and it's faster than most of the ships in the game. I fire chain shot until all the enemies can't move, then board and capture all the vessels I can. There's valuable treasure in chests on each vessel. This game plays more like an RPG than a naval sim.

That there is the most apt description in a single sentence.
