New player - some help apreciated.
Hello Tempest players,

I have just bought the game and there is so much I do not understand to the point that I really do not know where to start with my questions.

It feels like the game has just exited early access. Those who have been folloowing the game through EA are fine, but the game is not friendly to new players.

A hovering tooltips would be a great idea.

For example, some towns are hostile to me with or without having the pirate flag.
How can I trade and where are all the wares?
Why is everyone attacking me (even when I was anchored in a port)?
Where can I get a spyglass?
How to gain experience?
How do I fight sea monster?
Can we have a normal save (I am really getting tired of restarting the game)?

I really like the concept, the controls are not that difficult, the battels are fun, but most of the time I actually have no idea why I am fighting someone and whether they are meant to be friendly or hostile towards me.

I finished the in game tutorial (except fighting the sea monster) and it felt rushed. It also tells me not to attack pirates, but they attack me; where is the logic?

I looked for some tutorial videos, but they all seem to be out of date.

Pardon my English, not my mother tongue.

Any help (guidance) is much apreciated.

If you dont fly the Pirate flag on your ship the pirate will attac you. Your allies will always be the same as the flag you fly. (as far as i know)

I have never encoutnered a hostile town. Unless its a fortress that has a diffrent flag than i am use-ing.

you get XP by sinking enemy boats or taking over fortresses. The Green flag with axe has quests that reward you with XP.

The wares are in the last box to the right when in towns.

You will find diffrent items at diffrent locations and there you can buy spyglass for example...

You just need to think about it and you will find out how it works.

The save ing works fine... Atleast in my opinion....

Hi Murkur, thank you for your response.

I have figured out most of the things. Still do not know why I got attacked while in harbour.

Savegame would be a great idea. I still make silly mistakes and usually it is too late.

Is there a list of wares being sold for the visited towns, or do I have to dock each time?
Do wares change or towns always sell the same?

Cheers

wares and prices stay the same. your journal has a category that lets you know where you can find specific items - but only after you've visited a port to write the entry.

You can get attacked in harbor on occassions where one of those encounter popups are right on top of the harbor. Doesn't happen often, but it can happen. If your rep dips really low, you'll be refused entry unless you pay 500 gold.

awsome!

I am finally enjoying the game, but still unsure about the rep penalties, as quests do not warn about a possible consequences... ..or it is just me, another thing I overlooked?

while the quests wont say outright you lose rep it can be gleaned most of the time. Dominion for example has quests that specifically mention fighting Kingdom ships. Destroying Kingdom ships will obviously drop their rep and boost your Dominion rep.

Others are more sneaky, like when you're doing a fetch quest then you get ambushed by Black Flame or Order or something. Typically I've noticed that quests that spell out who you're facing will have large drops, because of volume, and quests that are neutral will have small drops.

You can also double dip, so if you are on the Dominion quest to destroy Kingdom forts, you could fly the Trade marque and for each wall and tower you blow up, you get Trade rep and when you turn in the quest you get the dominion rep.

Also be wary of two way fights. If the Order is fighting Black Flame and you're flying the Seeker marque, they'll both be hostile to you. If, prior to clicking on the encounter, you swap marques, you can have one side be allied to you.

its a simple system and can seem odd at times. I'm at 1000 rep with dominion, but if I'm not flying the Dominion Marque, they're hostile. You'd think being on such super good terms they'd know who I am and would at least be neutral to me without the marque.

Thank for that. I am really enjoying the game now. Som missions are repetative, but you can use them to get quick money and fix reputation.

I am still unsure how to fight monsters, any suggestions?

Monsters are event only NPCs when you do the right quests. Some of them however spawn randomly at the same place.

Kraken are stupid easy, you can target them with your scope for 15% while they are still submerged. They do not move and they only pop up tentacles that do minor damage and knock your ship around. If you have the ability to configure for aim speed and accuracy, thats the best option, as you'll fire more often and have more hits.

Sea Dragons are more annoying. You'd think you'd need to aim for the head, but you actually need to aim at the first arch on its path as it loops up and down in the water. Mortars are really good for them because they are instant without need to aim. Same as with kraken, fast aim and good accuracy is the way to go, and if you can spare the cannon balls, it can help sometimes to just fire as soon as he comes into your arc, accurcay be dam'd.

Leviathan cannont be targeted or killed. They are more like tornadoes, a phenomena to be avoided. If you have the sea monster relic, and you see the red circle under an enemy ship, you can use the relic to halt them in place and they'll take massive damage from the Leviathan though.

Crabs are the absolute worst, imo. They run up to melee range, they have a big circle attack zone, they both knock your ship around and halt its movement. So if you have a big slow ship, they can essentially stun lock you, and you wont be able to turn, get away, or get cannons aligned. I game them if I can, as soon as they appear, I'll leave until I can exit to the map, then I will re-enter the map and they'll be in the same spot and I can hit them from long range. I had like range 28 at one point and they fell without touching me. If you have to fight them, then again, fast aim, good accuracy and in this case, because you can't be turning to present your other side to fire, reload speed can be very helpful. Oh and damage relics like the fireball, hailstorm, and mortar.

Thank you Davy Jones and Stormtempter.

Leviathan is currently ruining my game.

10 Leviathan pops out everywhere. It sinks enemy ships, but mission progress requires "me" to sink them... so I repeat, Leviathan comes again and I eventially get sunk... with the cargo I need to complete the mission.. so I reload (buy) the cargo..

They inhabit certain areas more than others, can try to return later, or try other areas.
Ricochet Jan 6, 2017 @ 7:28pm
Leviathan are in deep water. Sail with the wind when possible so you can manuever quicker to avoid their attacks and let them damage enemy ships or draw the ships out of deep water. Leviathans are annoying but you just need to move out of there area ASAP.
