Who is the protagonist? SPOILERS OF COURSE!!!

So I get the majority of what happened, the gist of the story (as faffy and soppy as the ending turned out to be it was still a decent story told well), I think I saw the majority of the stories of the people in the world, but I am not really sure who I was playing as.

Is the player character supposed to be Kate in her "Light" form, seeing all the things she talks about at the end, like the widower and his sister, the bird woman, the guy with his ex-fiancee (cheating rat) and the vicar and so on?

Or are you just one of the orbs floating around? If so why do I hear my own footsteps?

Or is KATE the orbs?

I don't get who the player character is supposed to be. The only thing that makes sense is that you are Kate after the fact, retreading your own path to "the end".

I figured I was Kate having survived. There's a radio on the level crossing that says she's counting the days since it happened.

i heard that radio. She said it was her exposure to the light that was keeping her from being dead already from the gas.
But I also got the impression that she knew she was dying. And in other transmissions I heard her saying she knew she was going, but she wasn't ready yet, she was just getting herself ready to go

Probably Kate before she's totally "absorbed"/"merged" (dead) into the "light". All of the exploration it's her dying experience and she's able to see "flashes" not only from her past, but from everyone's past (anyone relevant anyways... ) because she's "merged" with the "light" and the "light" was present in pretty much every instance of those "flashes" that she's now "recalling"...

Maybe the Protagonist is nobody, like PI Paul Prospero in The Vanishing of Ethan Carter who is (Spoiler!) a non existent Char in Ethans Imagination
