Cannot join a friends game

My mate (who is sat in the room next to me so comms is not an issue) canot join my game and nor can I join his. We get each other's invites but the invite is nothing more than a chat message. Is it possible to join via an IP (he's on the same LAN)

So, nothing happens when you click on the "Join the game" line either in the chat message or the menu item ?

It isn't possible to join via IP, as it's all done through Steam - whilst you lose the "convenience" of IP joining, it does deal with NATs for you...

Did you try joining your friends game from right clicking on your friends in the Steam Friends list and scroll down to "Join Game". Try that.

And is he actually hosting a game, rather than a starting single player one ?

Eventually, after a lot of wailing and gnashing of teeth, and googling around, it miraculously joined the two of us, but we'd not done anything different other than sit around and do nothing for 15 mins or so (drinking coffee and bemoaning the current statte of gaming and how it was so much easire in the old days! :-) ) Haven't tried it again since we had a half hour session, but will update later.

Both 'hosting' and not a SP (I say 'hosting' as there wasn't seemingly a game to join)

You can also invite from within the game (game UI) or outside the game in Steam.

Its possible some Steam servers are having problem, hence the delay, but it would be unusual.

Would be worth trying again, even if you don't actually play a complete game. Do you have a decent internet as well ?
