hi Apr 29, 2016 @ 9:55am
Mine loads up, flashes the loading icon in the bottom right then crashes a few seconds later. Fresh instal, checked files.

System: Windows 10 Home, EVGA GTX 980 TI superclocked, i7 4790k, 16 gbs of ram. I have no clue if any of that is useful, but I thought it can't hurt.

Fixed it, I just had to install some k-light mega codek or whatever, it is working fine so far.

What's that? Or can you share the URL?

hi Apr 29, 2016 @ 8:19pm
Sorry, just got back from work, here is the url: http://www.codecguide.com/download_kl.htm I don't know which one is strictly needed, so I just got the biggest one to cast the widest net.

IMPORTANT: When installing, it will ask you to set certain things like default movie and audio players, it starts on the codecs main programs, but you can switch it to whatever you are currently using to avoid issues. After you set the options, there is one screen afterwards saying accept and decline, that page is an extra offer (probably some third party company advertising so that K-Light can make some money as it is a free program) I declined immediately since it wasn't what I wanted, up to you though, don't blame me if it turns into one of those sketchy programs.

After I installed that, I turned off compatability mode, so that might be screwing with it for you Lurzk, though I forgot to turn off always run as administrator, so I don't know if that one matters or not, I am just leaving it on because I don't care either way.

If you are getting an error aboot a failed steam api, all you need to do is restart steam and you are good to go. Past that, I can't help any of you, I am worthless when it comes to software malfunctions.

I have heard that you should uninstall any codec packs you have before installing new ones, so maybe you have some conflict with another codec pack? Honestly, I don't know anything aboot them, so I am just crap shooting here, but if you have the standard and mega installed at the same time, then try deleting them and any other codec pack you may have and try a fresh install of the mega one just to be sure.

That would be for Lavasoft's Web Companion. You definitely want to decline as it's akin to a piece of spyware and a browser hijacker. Such a shame to see Lavasoft, once provider of decent anti-spyware software, decline into making the very stuff they used to help protect people from.

@Lurzk Check specifically if you are using AC3 Filter. That in my case, is what was causing the crashes. Only the K-Lite mega pack offered me options to replace that. Make sure you use whatever the last option for installing is (expert or something?) as that will display the most options -- including those for AC3 Filter.

It was one of the options during the Expert (or whatever it was called) installation steps. Sorry I can't be more specific, but now the packs installed I a cannot see that installation wizard.

Provided whatever codec pack you used to get AC3 Filter onto your system has a clean uninstaller, you could also just uninstall it. Failing that, you can take a deep dive into your Windows installation's codec configuration and disable it or manually unregister it.

That's a far better alternative than allowing whatever junk K-Lite uses to supplant AC3 Filter onto your system and making the problem even worse. Probably it doesn't even get rid of AC3 Filter, but just registers its own thing with a higher merit value, which results in the DirectShow runtime favoring it over AC3 Filter.

As far as I can tell, the K-light has a clean uninstall option, I looked at it's download placement, and the C:/programfilesx86/k-light.... didn't flicker once so I assume all files associated with it are in that folder, including an uninstall application. So if it does cause any issue, then I am sure you can get rid of it easily enough.

I know that some older versions of K-Lite used to futz about with several system-wide configuration settings that were not correctly restored to the system defaults upon uninstallation.

Those kind of things are far more dangerous than a few stray files or inert registry entries.

I'm sorry, hopefully you are able to find another solution that will work. Have you tried emailing the support email with all the details you could?
