What does this thing even do? It doesn't seem to be making it free of charge to do the rubbing, so I don't have a clue as to what it does...

Not a free coupon, more like a skip button with limited use.

No, thats the Enlightenment Sphere, which is a different item. :P
I found out what it does just now, it let's you go into rub mode from the gallery entry for that card at any time, without cost but also without any effect (it won't upgrade the card, it's basically just a "view rub mode for this card" thing and you don't even need the card itself for it anymore).
