Yellow hearts?

I see I have 60 yellow hearts below the display of my health (red hearts) I haven't had musch time with this game so far, but I have to ask, what are they, and what are they for?

At first I thought they were like a "reserve" of HP, going down to restore my hp, veeeery slowly (like the stamina system in grim dawn) But so far, I've never had them decrease one bit, despite many deaths.
PS: Is there a full manual anywhere?

That yellow hearts represent your sanity. You will lose them when you use artifacts ("Q" key). You need to find one artifact before you can use it.

You will also regain a little sanity when doing stuff.
