'Fortune smiles on you'...but did it really?
Out of curiousity, I tried transmuting four Ember Fish Eyes (btw, how do I separate stacked items?), and I got the VO message normally reserved for successful transmutations (though I've not yet heard the one for a failure). The problem is that nothing appeared in my or my pet's inventory or in any of the four slots for transmuting items. What exactly did I make? Or fail to make?

It's not possible to split stacks.

Don't know about the transmutation. These are the recipes I found:

  • 3 necklaces of the same rarity -> 1 new necklace of that rarity
  • 3 rings of the same rarity -> 1 new ring of that rarity
  • Any 4 magic items -> 1 random cracked gem or 1 random dull gem
  • Any 4 rare items -> 1 random dull gem
  • Any 4 unique items -> 1 random gem
  • 2 gems of the same type and level -> 1 next-level gem of that type
  • 3 potions of the same type and level -> 1 next-level potion of that type
  • 1 Blank's Teeth Necklace, 1 Lefferts' Hands, 1 Lefler's Right Eye, 1 Tanwanteng's Left Eye -> 1 Strange Land Map
  • 1 stack of 3 pieces Sushi Grade Fish Meat, 1 rare belt, 1 rare pistol, 1 rare shield -> 1 Sushi Helm

Where does 'Sushi Grade Fish Meat' start appearing? And it looks like four Ember Fish Eyes creates a random dull gem. I don't know why nothing appeared that first time I tried it, and why the VO guy said 'fortune smiled on me'.

The Sushi Grade Fish Meat started appearing for me after I first beat the main campaign. Now it seems like I pull some up every fourth time or so when I go to a fishing hole.

Fandom states that only one of these items is required to transmute to get the Strange Land Map. (See link here: https://torchlight.fandom.com/wiki/Duran_the_Transmuter)

However, when I finally caught Tanwanteng's Left Eye, I tried transmuting it by itself, and nothing happened. As in, it didn't work. Any ideas what I am doing wrong?

I don't think I would need all 4 of the above items, as that would be quite impossible. (I have caught 500 fish and have only found Tanwanteng's Left Eye.)

Here is another person who looked at the data files and thought they figured out all of the recipes. The one for "Strange Land Map" is not listed. Maybe that's not really something that can be gotten from transmutation.

Anyway, I think the Strange Land Maps are the same as the ones the Wizard gives out when you are doing his Ember Quests before you kill Ordrak.

EDIT: I finally found out what you are talking about.

There is one webpage that does say that you only need one of the items listed.
However, there are at least 2 other pages that list 4 items that must be transmuted (presumably together). Since this is supposed to be sort of an ultimate challenge map, it makes sense that obtaining the map would be very difficult. Also, it is stated that the map is an Easter Egg in homage to something in one of the Diablo games. "The Secret Horse Level is an homage to the Secret Cow Level of Diablo II."

Here is a mod to make it easier to get the map:

I think you must be right. I may try some cheat codes to figure it out, and perhaps I'll post here what I discover in case anyone else is curious.

Thanks!

I certainly am curious, because I didn't know that map even existed, and I would like to try it. Since it's supposed to be very hard, it would be annoying to finally get the map, only to be killed right away and know that it would be super hard to get another map.
