1) You'll eventually find a healing spell (self heal or mass heal).
2) Socket your weapon to constantly heal you.
Either way though, there's plenty of healing potions and you'll find a whole shipload of them as well.
The best self-healing is by socketing a Core Ember gem into your weapon. That gem will heal you continously. The "cut" or "polished" size ones are best when you reach the higher character levels.
Some weapons will also steal health with every hit.
If the game gives you one of the random beginner dungeons that has a pool or two to fish from, you can sometimes catch a Fish Scale that can be socketed into a piece of armor for a small amount of continuous healing. Rarely do I ever get a fish scale from a fishing pool in a higher-level dungeon, but it can happen. In my many years of Torchlight play, I don't think I've ever gotten a Fish Scale from the stream in town. The chances to get one are much better in fishing pools located in the first three dungeon levels.
The chance to get Fish Eyes is much higher in those lower level pools as well. The Fish Eyes, when used, will increase your experience gain for a set duration.
You can either extract the socketable at the cost of the item or destroy the socketable to free up a space in the item for a new socketable.
Spell scrolls are found as random drops or can be purchased from the vendor, they have a randomly generated stock that refreshes over time. I find utility spells most useful (haste, heals, summons, etc.) and avoid direct damage spells.
