I also rather like the little mini levels that you get via quests or maps or just a random enemy droping a portal, they really help break up the "clear, next floor down" which is diablo 1 in a nutshell.
But, yes, it is boring. I don't play these games more than 3-4 times through. They just get old and you want to DO SOMETHING. Which, in my opinion, if any game makes you want to stop playing games and go DO SOMETHING, it's not doing something right. Maybe its just the gene, maybe its just me, but I have yet to play a H'n'S RPG that made me want to keep playing it, or go back and play it again later. I've seen FPSs that blew my mind, RTSs that will last forever, Platformers and Combo Fighters that I'll revisit time and time again.... but the Diablo-ish H'n'S RPGs have yet to do something that really holds my intrest.
I was lucky enough to win TL2 in a giveaway and had never played either of them before so went in neutral. Its just a loot filled borefest, sure it looks all cutesy and runs smooth, just a nice game but you just drown in loot and it makes the whole game worthless.
Its just a continual run of click click loot click click loot..
Now im not saying TL1 is that different, but its a very toned down version of TL2, less loot, not as shiney but somehow it works a lot better.
So if anything i would say TL2 is the real bore of the family not TL1
