Retired by mistake

Hi,

I put a necklace to a girl just to see what will happen and I didn't know that will retire my character. I didn't make a new one anyway.

1. Can I bring back my character somehow?
2. What for is retire? I don't undestand.
3. What should I do before I retire my character? What can I do with this option?

I am lvl 62.

1) No. Once you confirm a character's retirement they are rendered permanently unusable, like when a Hardcore character is killed.

2) Retiring lets you start the next character with some extra fame, and whatever item you heirloomed to them will have boosted stats and lower item requirements (think of it like a New Game Plus type of feature). This can be done repeatedly, so future descendants will have more fame than the last, and hierlooms can become extremely powerful (but if I recall there may be a limit to how many times any one item can be heirloomed).

3) You could try heirlooming a powerful Unique quality item to make it even more powerful than it already is. Just beware if the item has "+Health" stats on it (for example, +100 health on equip); I remember hearing about a bug where if items with +Health modifiers are heirloomed the bonus becomes so large it goes into the negative numbers, and equipping it would instantly kill your character. I don't know if that bug was ever fixed, but either way it would be best to avoid heirlooming items with +Health modifiers as there are better stats anyways (like Damage Reduction or Critical Damage bonuses).

It's been a while since I used the retirement system in Torchlight (despite only having 25 hours on the Steam version, I used to have a retail copy of this game some time back), but I remember that much at least. I apologize if this information is wrong or outdated in some way.

2) You can retire Heirloom an Item up to 10 Times. This also applies to Gems so if you're really min-maxing you could heirloom a nice Gem first then socket those into the weapon.

Before retiring, place all your items you want to keep (besides the one you're heirlooming) into the shared stash so they won't be lost. Also, since your money won't carry over, you might as well spend all of your money gambling.

As far as I know, that's not true.

Between enchanting and heirlooming a very nice Epic Assassin's Chest, I ended up with a bonus of more than 1.7 million health from it. I could equip it fine, the only problem was filling up my health, which has to be done with a level up, since even health shrines healed 'only' 70k or so.

i did the same thing JUST NOW......retired, not fully understanding what would happen.
lost everything, didnt/wouldnt wanna retire a character. but this game is so old, i guess noone will even read this :/
can i un-retire in torchligtt 2 maybe? :D

Kind of responding to an old post here but...from other forum posts I've read, I think it's possible that you can get lucky and end up with a huge health boost, but not huge enough to loop into the negatives. But, if you're not lucky, then your character is dead. So...probably not something people will want to risk doing.
