This stuff is in my files under the title "Game Wont' Start":

"You have to uninstall the game and delete it's registries as well followed by a simple PC restart before reinstalling which is also easy , you can even google it.

This goes without saying that you already have a powerful enough machine to run the game, you didn't cheat or modify the game files in any way, and you have already checked that your antivirus is allowing your application to work.

P.S. If you installed mods on the game, that might be the problem too since some mods don't go well with others and crash the game or won't let it start due to the fact that multiple mods are trying to access the same files and overwrite them countering each other. Turn off your mods one by one and test to see if it works."

What does your Ogre.log say? You can copy-paste this in your Windows Explorer address bar to find it:

%appdata%\runic games\torchlight

Also, did you try verifying game cache, reinstalling the game or updating your GPU drivers?

thanks for the reply. Ended up having to uninstall and reinstall twice before finally worked. Think just the download missed a file or 2

I had this issue. I revalidated my steam cache, and rolled back my graphic drivers. To delete/refresh your steam cache go to properties, it will be be one of the first options. That seemed to work me.

Have you try running in compadibility mode, or run as administrator?
When you have an exe that is not functioning it tends to be due to the game not finding its files.
I would keep experimenting, you'll figure it out with enough tinkering.

I am on windows 10 and didn't have any issue with the game till steam updated to their latest patch for controllers. Maybe you should think before becoming nasty. I run 10 yr old games on my system just fine. This is the only game I am running through steam that old that doesn't still work. Maybe steam should check and find out what they broke

My machine does an auto-restart when it gets too hot. I was in the middle of leaving the game when my machine did this. When everything was up and running again, Torchlight wouldn't run. It would start to run and then stop before anything happened. I went into the "AppData\Roaming\runic games\torchlight" folder and deleted the local_settings.txt file and the game booted up just fine. The game just makes a new folder when you run it. This often works in Torchlight II as well.

For me, it worked to delete saves in saves directory - there was, in my case, saves of class from mod, which i uninstall and therefore, game was crashing

This is craziness, but it actually worked. I found this answer on the Steam forum and copied it word for word. (Thanks Webbstre)

Have you been using mods?

Yes, but Steam tends to ignore your cloud settings and reload your old saves, which may mean your last save had a mod that the game is trying to load, and the cloud is loading your saves. Here's what you need to try:
1- Go into your application data/runic games/torchlight/ folder and delete both saves folders.
2- Leave the window open, and start Torchlight.
3- When the cloud recreates your save folders, delete them before Torchlight finishes loading.

This worked for me completely. I don't know what happened. Did the client update in the last 7 months? I was gone, and when I came back I couldn't load the client at all. Uninstalled and Re-installed, and still wouldn't load. Moved all the saves into folders on the desktop and the game loaded. Now to figure out which mods I had installed, and which one wasn't compatible with the latest update. Perhaps nVidia drivers? Or a Windows update? Who know, just glad I didn't lose 25 hours of gameplay.

Okay I figured it out! luanch the game. When it asks you if you want to use the saved data on your computer, goto Run type in %appdata% and delete all your saves. After that click on Okay and it should launch just fine.

Edit: Looks like restarting my computer fixed it. There are other solutions on Runic Games forum. Worth checking if you can't make it work still.

About 5 people said the above solutions worked for them.

Problem launching the game
Whenever I try to play Torchlight, it launches "minimized," and won't come up no matter how much I try to un-minimize. I can sometimes get it to open correctly by clicking on the loading image (orange with character's faces and title on it) on launch, but it's very difficult to do successfully. Has anyone else had this problem, or know a fix for it?

Thanks for the list of possible solutions.
The solution turned out to be to right-click the preview of the window when you hover over the icon on the taskbar (not right-clicking the icon itself) then have the window maximize, then go into the game's options and reset the display settings to what I play it in every time I start the game.
Windows has been weird the last few versions.

sorry for the necrobump but just in case for others out there who still might encounter this issue..
on my end, it was windows defender's Controlled Folder Access. i had to allow torchlight2.exe and modlauncher.exe through controlled folder access and had the issue resolved. ;)

If you have mods installed, go in and physically delete the mods, that is what I had to do to get it working again.
