What differences are between difficulties of Easy, Normal, Hard and Very Hard ?
What differences are between difficulties of Easy, Normal, Hard and Very Hard ?

Do harder difficulties increase drops? Gold? XP?

Higher difficulties just make monsters stronger to my knowledge.

Easy difficulty is really easy. If you're experienced in these type of games then you'll probably want to start a softcore run on at least hard difficulty.

Difficulty scaling is really more like this:
Easy = Casual
Normal = Easy
Hard = Normal
Very Hard = Hard

Thanks, but I have seen people say that higher difficulties DO affect drop rates of items and gold, or else what incentive you have to run on Very Hard?

I know that works on some other ARPG's, but I haven't noticed it on Torchlight 1.

I agree with this assessment, when comparing TL1 with more modern games.

Challenge mostly and achievements.

+1 For the challenge and satisfaction of doing it.

I remember (back when I had never played an ARPG before) trying the demo out on the default difficulty and being bored to tears to the point that I couldn't even make it to the end of the demo (and that was only a couple floors!). Just click on enemy, it dies, repeat.

Then I tried putting it on the hardest difficulty and, lo and behold, if I just clicked on enemies now they would kill me! I actually had to pay attention to the game and my enjoyment went way, way up.*

In summary, Very Hard seems to have been put in for people like me, who don't play to get loot, but rather to have a game that's more engaging.

*though the irony of this is that I never actually got around to playing the full game until just recently 8-}
