Failure to Launch, Win 7
Symptom: Does not start, no error messages, nothing happens.
Figured out: My windows text size setting (Appearance and Personalization / Display) was set to "Larger". Apparently the game doesn't like that, and when I set it to "Medium", the game does launch.
Game also crashes when I try to set the game resolution to something other than my current windows resolution.

[Solved] Problem running Torchlight in Windowed Mode
Hello !
I was playing Torchlight just fine in fullscreen (1680*1050) but I wanted to watch something else in another window while playing. So I went into the setting menu, unchecked the "Fullscreen" option and set the game to run in 1024*768 before clicking on "Apply". The problem is, the game is in a window indeed, as my taskbar is saying but I can't see the game. It's like the game is running beyond my desktop.
I did a right click on it from the taskbar and closed the game. I launched it again right after that : the starting icon with the 3 main characters shows up, then I hear the main menu's music, my taskbar is telling me the game is running and is just waiting for me to enjoy it but... still nothing on my screen ! It's not underneath my others windows, it's not reachable, I can't do a thing with it. And since I can't interact anymore with the game, I can't even switch back to fullscreen. =/
So, my questions are simples : How can I solve that ? (I'm on a Windows 7 Pro.)
If it's unsolvable, is there at least a way to get it back in fullscreen ?
Thank you for reading me and thanks a lot more for your help.
Thank you ! It worked.
The thing is, I'm new to Windows 7 and as I tried to right click on the game in the taskbar, it only asked if I wanted to reach the window of the game as left click should do or if I wanted to make a shortcut for it. I didn't know I had to do the right click onto the "preview" image that goes when my mouse is on the taskbar in order to Minimize or Maximize something.
I guess with this problem my knowledge of this OS rised ! Thanks again. :)

I got it working. I just deleted the Torchlight folder in the Appdata/Roaming/Runic Games Folder. Then tryed it and it worked?
---------------------------------------------------------------------
My machine does an auto-restart when it gets too hot. I was in the middle of leaving the game when my machine did this. When everything was up and running again, Torchlight wouldn't run. It would start to run and then stop before anything happened. I went into the "AppData\Roaming\runic games\torchlight" folder and deleted the local_settings.txt file and the game booted up just fine. The game just makes a new folder when you run it. This often works in Torchlight II as well.

I did a search in the Discussions logs and found this:
"You have to uninstall the game and delete it's registries as well followed by a simple PC restart before reinstalling which is also easy , you can even google it.
This goes without saying that you all reaady have powerful enough machines to run the game , you didn't cheat or modify the game files in any way , and you have all ready checked that your antivirus is allowing your application to work.
P.S. If you installed mods on the game , that might be the problem too since some mods don't go well with others and crash the game or won't let it start due to the fact that multiple mods are trying to access the same files and overwrite them countering eachother. Turn off your mods one by one and test to see if it works."
Maybe deleting the registries is the key, or making sure you restart your PC before reinstalling. There is a free app that will delete the registries for you, but I uninstalled it a while back because it constantly gave me popups asking me to upgrade to the paid version, and I no longer play the game I needed it for, so I'm sorry I can't remember the name of it.

This is craziness, but it actually worked. I found this answer on the Steam forum and copied it word for word. (Thanks Webbstre)
Have you been using mods?
Yes, but Steam tends to ignore your cloud settings and reload your old saves, which may mean your last save had a mod that the game is trying to load, and the cloud is loading your saves. Here's what you need to try:
1- Go into your application data/runic games/torchlight/ folder and delete both saves folders.
2- Leave the window open, and start Torchlight.
3- When the cloud recreates your save folders, delete them before Torchlight finishes loading.

This worked for me completely. I don't know what happened. Did the client update in the last 7 months? I was gone, and when I came back I couldn't load the client at all. Uninstalled and Re-installed, and still wouldn't load. Moved all the saves into folders on the desktop and the game loaded. Now to figure out which mods I had installed, and which one wasn't compatible with the latest update. Perhaps nVidia drivers? Or a Windows update? Who know, just glad I didn't lose 25 hours of gameplay.

Okay I figured it out! luanch the game. When it asks you if you want to use the saved data on your computer, goto Run type in %appdata% and delete all your saves. After that click on Okay and it should launch just fine.

Edit: Looks like restarting my computer fixed it. There are other solutions on Runic Games forum. Worth checking if you can't make it work still.
About 5 people said the above solutions worked for them.
The solution turned out to be to right-click the preview of the window when you hover over the icon on the taskbar (not right-clicking the icon itself) then have the window maximize, then go into the game's options and reset the display settings to what I play it in every time I start the game.
Windows has been weird the last few versions.
I agree that the latest versions of Windows are problematic for gamers. They (Microsoft) claim it's better for gamers, but that is not my experience.
